Sports teams table

[edit]

I think it'd look a lot better, be more intuitive and more compact if the logos and club names were in the header, and the data rows below that. Right now the table layout makes more sense for a computerized database rather than human-readable information. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.137.223.153 (talk) 20:12, 8 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

October 2015 Comment: Washington Stealth relocated to Langley, BC, Canada in mid-2014 and changed name to the Vancouver Stealth; Puget Sound Gunners relocated to Issaquah, WA, so they're no longer associated in any significant way with Everett, WA. Recommend deleting them or making a "former sports teams" table which could include the former Arena Football League team, etc.

Everett's sister cities

[edit]

I find no evidence that "Kligo,Ireland", purportedly a sister city of Everett, even exists. The US embassy in Dublin [1] web page on sister cities lists neither Everett nor Kligo. The city of Sligo, Ireland, (nearest I can come to it) has Tallahassee, Florida as a sister city. The 87-page Atlas of Ireland published by the Ordinance Survey of Ireland doesn't have a Kligo in its Gazetteer.... So I hafta figure that somewhere this bad penny of information has got sucked into wikipedia and mestastisized throughout all the faux wikis and ad-driven information sources on the internet as gospel truth. So I recommend that "Kligo" be taken off entirely, unless someone can demonstrate there actually is a Kligo. Breffni Whelan 04:55, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's a tough one. The source given for that page[2] ought to be reliable, but I agree, I can't find any other reference to a Kligo in Ireland. I've emailed the Lt Governor's office to see if they are aware of a potential error on their site. — Timotab Timothy (not Tim dagnabbit!) 06:53, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Protection still needed?

[edit]

This article has been protected since the end of August. Do we think the protection is still needed? I came here to add some dab links, as I did at SS City of Everett, a recently created article about a ship built in, and named after, this city. I propose that the article get the following dabs:

Comments? If there are no comments within a few days about why this still needs protecting, I'll probably remove the protection. ++Lar: t/c 01:35, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A vandal was hitting Everett High School (Washington) and related articles and has since moved to talk pages. I don't have a problem with unprotecting, per se. But if this starts again, then an abuse report is in order.--chaser - t 03:06, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Neighborhoods

[edit]

i think that i want to do the neighborhoods. since im from everett, i could get pictures. make pages for all the neighborhood and link them so you can click on the name and it brings u to the neighborhood page. seattle has this with that page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by CallOfAndrew (talkcontribs) 19:14, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Before creating such articles, make certain that you have reliable sources about those neighborhoods that can establish their notability to justify their having their own articles.
If you look at the Seattle article, you'll notice that those neighborhoods that do have articles have several reliable sources attached as references to support them. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 19:27, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Speaking of neighborhoods, the images in the article seem awfully heavily focused on downtown. Someone might want to look through some of what I've made available on Commons: I've taken a lot of pictures elsewhere in Everett. - Jmabel | Talk 08:24, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

do you happen to have a picture of hewitt ave thats my favorite area. just not the taco del mar pic of hewitt ave thats already here. or any pics of uss abe lincoln? i can get some pics of Everett but that would be in the summer. any requests? just mostly the north Everett. but Jmabel, people barely know what south Everett looks like, put some of those on here. oh, and i dont really know how to put pictures on here. is there a tutorial for that, if so can u make a link for me. but if there isnt can someone just teach me. tyvm CallMeAndrew (talk) 02:27, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Correction to the size (or ranking) of the Everett Marina

[edit]

Please change second-largest to largest

The city of Everett's Marina is no longer the second-largest on the West Coast, but rather the LARGEST, due to recent marina addition. At the port of Everett Website, they confirm this: http://www.portofeverett.com/home/index.asp?page=2

wow, thats pretty awsome, i would edit it for u and put in the reference but someone made Everett protected. thats sucks. Fix? CallMeAndrew (talk) 05:02, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

History

[edit]

The history section here is pretty meager. From what I understand, the history of Everett is pretty well documented, though I haven't read much of it myself. I'm told that the public library there has a really good set of documents on city history, if there is a Wikipedian living there.

There is almost nothing in the article on economic rise and partial fall as a mill town, evolution of the demographics, how the Boeing plant ended up there, or even about most of the notable historic districts (the name "Rucker" appears only once in the article, and that's for the address of a high school).

I'm (much) more focused on Seattle, but if someone wants to work on this seriously and has any particular areas where they need to find citations for something in particular, do feel free to ask my help. - Jmabel | Talk 06:31, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sketching out a short article on the Rucker brothers, which I hope to add soon. When I do, I can add a line here to link to it. I do live near Everett, but I'm really only interested in the early history, and that's not what's lacking in the article here. Iglew (talk) 19:49, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My Rucker Brothers article is up now. When I came here to link to it, I found that it wasn't easy to slip in a reference without rewriting the first few paragraphs of the history section, which I did. One result of that is that it's even more lopsided toward early history than before. Someone needs to fill in with some more post-1900 history. Iglew (talk) 05:41, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Removed apparant vandalism

[edit]

I removed a bit from the Arts subsection referring to a supposed arts festival honoring Joe Baucco. There is no mention of such a festival (or even of such an individual) on the city's website, the city's Arts Council's website, or in the archives of the Everett Herald. In addition, the person who added it has only vandalisms as his/her only contributions. So I'm certain this is yet another vandalism. --H-ko (Talk) 18:17, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I will be making my complete review later; the first thing I noticed is, you should qualify "seventh-largest" by population, as by area, it appears to rank 9th. I suggest "seventh-most populous".--Jasper Deng (talk) 08:53, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

A few issues to address before it can be passed

  1. Is it well written?
    A. The prose is clear and concise, and the spelling and grammar are correct:
    In addition to the above:
    • "American settlement" – "American" is not restricted to non-native settlers. Use a different term.
      • Fixed.
    • "Everett became the county seat in 1897 after a dispute with Snohomish contested over several elections and a Supreme Court case." – I understand this is the lead, but this seems unnecessarily vague to me. "dispute" in particular could use an adjective.
      • I don't think an adjective is needed, given the explanation given in the second half of the sentence.
    • "Puget Sound was further explored and charted ny the Hudson's Bay Company" – typo, "ny" should be "by"
      • Fixed.
    • "The railroad did not terminate in Everett as originally hoped, instead continuing along the shoreline of Puget Sound to Seattle." – hoped by whom?
      • Added.
    • "After outside investors withdrew in the Everett Land Company" – "in the" should be "from the"
      • Added "shares", as the investment was initiated by the investors, not vice versa.
    • "Everett itself suffered from a major fire on August 2, 1909, that destroyed 12 buildings, including the county courthouse." – the second-to-last comma is not needed.
      • Fixed.
    • "The Port of Everett was created on July 13, 1918, to enable public ownership of the waterfront and promote economic development in the city" – similarly, the last comma is not needed.
    • "The works program also built a new county airport, Paine Field, southwest of Everett that opened in 1936 to serve commercial uses" – "southwest of Everett" is awkward here; I suggest moving it before the first comma.
      • Moved behind instead.
    • "The population boom triggered construction of new housing areas around the peninsula and new schools, with enrollment in the Everett School District doubling to 11,600 from 1941 to 1951" – did it double exactly? More often than not it didn't start out with 5,800 students, so give the original number.
      • The source gives the 1941 figure as 5,990 and the 1951 figure as 11,628. A slight difference, but quite minor in restrospect. Added the rounded figures and dropped the doubling.
    • "Electronics manufacturer Fluke Corporation (now part of Fortive)" – "now" seems rather redundant here. Consider removing the entire parenthetical remark.
      • The change is quite recent and most sources have not been updated to reflect the new name, so I believe it's warranted.
    • "The city government does not plan to enforce the dress code ordinance until the lawsuit is resolved with the lifting of the preliminary injunction." – a little confusing in the context of the previous sentence; if the 9th Circuit ruled in favor of the city, what happened to the injunction?
      • Still pending. The appeal to the Supreme Court has not been processed yet, and the last newspaper articles are from February 2020.
    • The farmers' market should be capitalized as "Everett Farmers Market" seems to be the official name of the entity.
      • Done, but I'd also like to keep the link.
    • "an ameatur team" – typo; consider rewording as "are an amateur team... set to begin their... in the 2020... league" to remove the commas for better flow.
      • Reworded the sentence.
    • "The Port of Everett also has a large public marina and its own boat launch at 10th Street that also serves a ferry to Jetty Island." – This is rather awkward with two uses of "also". In particular, it isn't clear what the second "also" conveys here.
      • Dropped the first "also"; the second is meant to tie the ferry to the 10th Street boat launch.
    • "A public swimming pool was opened at Forest Park in 1975 and replaced by a permanent structure in 1984" – so the first facility was temporary? Consider clarifying that.
      • Fixed.
    • "The park is situated along Pigeon Creek, with recreational facilities on a plateau overlooking the ravine and several miles of hiking trails." – a plateau is usually considered to be a much larger landform (many square miles). Maybe use "hilltop"?
      • Fixed.
    • "Its bus rapid transit system, Swift has" – missing comma
      • Fixed.
    B. It complies with the manual of style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation:
    • "The city's growth was not stopped by the fire and a new county courthouse opened in 1910 alongside the Everett High School campus" – "stopped" is not very academic in this context, maybe "hindered"?
      • Fixed.
    • The 1916 massacre's content should be perhaps cut down and given its own section with {{main|1916 Everett massacre}}.
      • Cut and merged into a single paragraph, but given that it was a defining event in the city's history and has a buildup that needs explanation, I think the current size is fine.
    • "which pre-dated Everett" – MOS:HYPHEN: one word usually.
      • Fixed.
    • List of neighborhood associations: Consider making into prose per MOS:USEPROSE.
      • I believe it fulfills WP:LISTPURP, in that it is a natural index that would be less coherent in prose. A similar example at Arlington, Washington did not draw complaints at FAC, and other examples for cities exist.
    • Similarly, consider the need for the table listing the teams of Everett; this seems redundant to the prose.
      • Tables for sports teams are fairly standard across city articles, especially to add championships. I have expanded it further by including former teams.
  2. Is it verifiable with no original research?
    A. It contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline:
    B. All in-line citations are from reliable sources, including those for direct quotations, statistics, published opinion, counter-intuitive or controversial statements that are challenged or likely to be challenged, and contentious material relating to living persons—science-based articles should follow the scientific citation guidelines:
    C. It contains no original research:
Most would seem to consider the climate of the whole region to be oceanic, and the given climate data only supports a "dry summer" for one month. Consider prioritizing the description of the climate as oceanic.
Moved it up, but I am unsure what to do with the remaining Koppen sentence.
    D. It contains no copyright violations nor plagiarism:
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. It addresses the main aspects of the topic:
    B. It stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style):
It took me an hour or so to read through the article; this is about as much content as I think is appropriate without becoming overwhelming.
  4. Is it neutral?
It represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each:
  5. Is it stable?
It does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute:
It may soon need updating due to the pandemic's effect on employment.
  6. Is it illustrated, if possible, by images?
    A. Images are tagged with their copyright status, and valid fair use rationales are provided for non-free content:
Perhaps use more images, particularly for sections that don't have any. It's understandable if no such images exist.
Will work on taking more photos once my camera is back in good condition (and likely during the post-pandemic recovery).
    B. Images are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions:
  7. Overall:
    Pass or Fail:
On hold while the remaining issues, primarily pertaining to writing, are ironed out.--Jasper Deng (talk) 04:07, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jasper Deng: Thanks for the review. I have made changes as suggested, but also left comments where I feel there is a better option. SounderBruce 09:38, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

More things:

  • "which relinquished their lands to the territorial government and established the nearby Tulalip Indian Reservation, where they would be relocated." – should be "who", as these are all groups of persons.
    • Made the treaty into the subject.
  • "It is located primarily on Port Gardner Peninsula" – the Port Gardner Peninsula
    • Fixed.
  • "The city has a high rate of opioid abuse, particularly OxyContin and heroin, fueled by cross-state drug trafficking."[quantify]

Otherwise, it's probably ready.--Jasper Deng (talk) 00:08, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

List of cities and towns in Washington is a long title, and "seventh-largest city in Washington state" is a better link text for it than "second-largest", which does not describe it at all. WP:SURPRISE. If it does need to be shortened, moving "second-largest" outside of the link would be a better option. -- JHunterJ (talk) 11:38, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Additionally, even if the link were "too long", that's not a particularly good rationale for the other changes being reverted; all of those appear to be correct and constructive. Nikkimaria (talk) 11:59, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please AGF on an article that has been massively improved in the past few weeks. You have not adequately explained why the convert changes are necessary, nor why we need to have a six-word pipe link when the three-word version is just fine and conforms with normal use. Nor has the removal of so-called "pointless filler" been adequately explained in this conflict. SounderBruce 05:33, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Architecture and listed buildings

[edit]

This a great article, very well researched but I was looking for an overview of the city's landmarks like museums, churches, monuments etc and couldn't see it. The lead should also highlight the most important landmarks. The history section is proportionally too long and detailed for an overview, consider, moving it to History of Everett, Washington and condensing it here.† Encyclopædius 03:30, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Encyclopædius, some of that content should be covered in a separate Downtown Everett article or an expanded Hewitt Avenue Historic District, as it would not be representative of the whole city. I'll look into splitting off the history section, but I would rather have the full history explained here. SounderBruce 03:43, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think this article should have an overview of the most notable landmarks and architecture too though, it's comprehensive other than that. Excellent work.† Encyclopædius 03:50, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly better picture

[edit]

The article currently uses File:Port Gardner Bay, Everett, ca 1905 (CURTIS 70).jpeg; I think File:Everett waterfront from Rucker Hill, ca. 1910 - DPLA - f2673f3ac45cde1ccd800315b9e92495.jpg (possibly either cropped or at a larger size) might be a better choice. High resolution and provides a very good overview of the city at that time.

Sources for name in infobox and rest of article not aligned

[edit]

I'm not sure how to fix this or I would do it myself. The sources for the Lushootseed name area the same in the infobox and the rest of the article, but they are separate references, not just instances of the same article. If someone could fix that that would be great. PersusjCP (talk) 20:25, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The citations need to have the same reference name; also please do not leave citations with their default names (such as ":0"), which are hard to read and track. Citations should also follow the norms established by the article and other policies; in this case, MDY formatting and CS1 templates. SounderBruce 04:04, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Native language of Everett

[edit]

Lushootseed is the native language of the Everett area. A place's native language is closely associated with that place. It has been in use for thousands of years and continues to be used in the community. It is not just a random language. Like any other article, the native language translation can appear in the lead. @Magnolia677 PersusjCP (talk) 22:08, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

While I agree that the Lushootseed name belongs in the article, I'm not seeing a strong reason to include it in the infobox and lead; Lushootseed is not an official language of the city, county, or state, nor does the name get used widely by these governments or secondary sources like The Herald. Maybe (and hopefully) this will change in the future, but as Wikipedia is a reflection of the sources we have on hand, we should not be making the call ourselves. SounderBruce 04:07, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with User:SounderBruce, per MOS:FIRST and MOS:LEADLANG. --Magnolia677 (talk) 14:36, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"unrelated" areas like the port gardner peninsula

[edit]

@Magnolia677 How is the prehistory of Everett unrelated to Everett? Do you know where Everett is? It is on the Port Gardner Peninsula, in fact, it takes up the entire Port Gardner peninsula. History doesn't begin with the founding of a city. History begins thousands of years before. Trying to erase history doesn't change the objective facts PersusjCP (talk) 16:14, 18 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
