Clean up
[edit]I moved this from the main Kolkata page as it seems to be a big list, although it does contain some useful info. However the structure needs to be cleaned up (IMHO) as the article does not seem to flow. - Master Of Ninja 08:23, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
I regret to say that this article is not only very limited in scope, but also gives a biased picture of the education scene in Kolkata, having the usual emphasis on higher studies and privileged students and institutions. It has virtually no merit. The non-privileged children of this city mainly attend government primary schools if they go to school at all. The quality of education available in these schools is dismal by world standards. Some recent initiatives to bring more children into the school system and improve the quality of teaching eg. Shikhshalaya Prakalpa, have had limited success. A useful article showing the whole picture of education provision in the city needs to report on the school experiences of the average child, rather than listing a few prestigious institutions.
I have spent almost 6 months a year in Kolkata for the last 12 years. I am a foreigner married to a local woman, I attempt to perform small, useful works in the field of education. I know what goes down here ! jon jonpardeshi@yahoo.co.in --84.9.151.132 21:22, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- I think it's appropriate to talk more about specific higher institutions - they are more likely to be notable, individually. But certainly a discusion about government schools in general would be a wonderful addition. It would be good if you can add something!
- I have:
- removed the sections on individual schools, colledges and other instituions. Such lists are almost certainly incomplete, and most (posibly not all) of the entries are not notable.
- left the list of universities. Universities are much larger and more likely to be significant.
- copyedited the lot for readability
- deleted anything that I think the average reader will find uninteresting
- It's a lot shorter and, I hope, more readable. It contains less information, but I hope I've kept the encyclopedic bits and taken out the bits that aren't really encyclopedic. See what you think. If you agree, perhaps you might replace the cleanup tag with stub?

- You did some good work organising, but you have removed far too much information. "I think the average reader will find uninteresting": you will find that it is a far too limited criteria for Wikipedia, as Wikipedia aspires to at once a general purpose and specialized encyclopedia. Wiki is not paper, so topics of specialised rather than general interest also find their place here.
- Since the schools are considered notable enough to have their own articles, it stands to reason they are notable enough to find their way into this list.
- You are also obviously not acquainted with the actual situation at Kolkata, as you have removed from the article those institutions that are considered most notable in the city, such as Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics and Indian Institute of Statistics. Loom91 08:06, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- And you have put back far too much! :-) 'INSTITUTE OF JUTE TECHNOLOGY' ? Having an article on wikipedia is not a sign of notability, at least, not where schools are concerned. And many of those links are not to wikipedia pages anyway, but off-wiki. They at least should be removed.
- You're right that I'm not familiar with Kolkata. What about we keep just the ones that you think are notable, based on what you know, and trash the rest? I guess we could start a List of educational institutions in Kolkata but I don't think it would add value. Regards, Ben Aveling 10:35, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- In past, school deletion debates have in overall concluded that schools are usually inherently notable. That's why you won't see schools being put on AfD these days. Since a whole article is bigger than a mention in a different article, it seems to me that the mention should inherit the notability of the parent article. In any case I've removed those schools without articles.
- I'm removing some of the institutes that are probably not very notable. Loom91 07:18, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- My memory is that everyone agrees that schools in general are not notable, but there are a small number of people who feel very pasionately about any given school. So although most schools are not notable in any real sense, they stay on wikipedia because it causes too much grief trying to get rid of them. Regards, Ben Aveling 10:28, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- Well, your notion of real sense is not shared by all other editors. In any case, as the articles are staying on, IMO the list should stay on too. Loom91 10:33, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
