[edit]Hmm. I don't think "Downeast" stops at the Canadian border. New Brunswick and Nova Scotia residents also refer to themselves as being "Downeast." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.12.65.84 (talk • contribs) 00:16, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- So do people who like in Aroostook county, and they aren't even close to the coast. The term has become muddied over the decades. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.125.242.236 (talk) 21:01, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
Inferior?
[edit]I seriously doubt that the other Down Easts are inferior just because they aren't as well known, so "other, inferior Down Easts" becomes "other Down Easts." Svalbard in winter 15:42, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Split (2008)
[edit]Because it is written where the Maine "Down East" is the dominant one. Even if this is true, the other "Down Easts" shouldn't be in a section. They should be disambiguated with their own articles and or merged into existing articles covering the same area. --Triadian (talk) 05:35, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
other "villages"
[edit]There are a several villages that were left out, including: Franklin, Sullivan, Lamoine and Hancock (not Hancock county, but the town within the county.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.125.242.236 (talk) 20:58, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
- Yes -- Trenton, too. And why is Bucksport considered to be Down East with greater certainty than Ellsworth? It seems very arbitrary to me. -- TheMaestro (talk) 03:02, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

– As per comments on Talk page, no evidence in G. Books that Maine's Down East is the automatic meaning, nor more notable than Down East (Canada) and Down East (North Carolina) combined. In ictu oculi (talk) 22:25, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
- If it's moved, it should be Down East (Maine).--Cúchullain t/c 23:38, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
- On second thought, oppose. The article "Down East" could reasonably cover the Maritimes as well as this part of Maine: this book by Sargent F. Collier is titled Down East: Maine, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and the Gaspé and covers all these areas together. I've found some other sources that appear to use the phrase in this way, while I'm having trouble finding any that clearly refer to the Maritimes while excluding eastern Maine. Expanding the article would probably be a more productive solution that trying to split material into articles on the Maine region and the Canadian region.
- The only other ambiguous articles are Down East (North Carolina) and Down East, The Magazine of Maine, which is of course a reference to the subject of this article. This article got over 4x the page views of the other two combined: 3354 in the last 90 days compared to 435 for Down East (North Carolina) and 450 for the magazine.--Cúchullain t/c 00:19, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- The material presented in this article makes ti a WP:COATRACK grabbag of shared name topics which should exist in separate articles, and not one article. The categories and templates shows this is supposed to be a Main article, but there is a large portion about Canada, making this an unsuitable article to exist.-- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 09:12, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- It's not a coatrack, it's just not very good. Various sources exist for the phrase as applies to the northeastern U.S. and Canada, and they could be used to write a decent article. Two dictionaries with entries for the phrase include both Maine/New England and the Canadian Maritimes.[1][2] Even within Maine, the phrase seems to be used multiple ways: as a general reference to this part of the U.S. and Canada, for all of Maine,[3] and for the extreme eastern part of Maine called "Downeast Maine".[4]
- Oppose per Cuchullain. Can anyone honestly say with a straight face an article that gets four times the views of another article of the same name isn't the primary topic? If IIO doesn't like our guideline on primary topics he should change it and not waste the community's time with RM after RM based on the same faulty logic. Better yet, disambigapedia.org appears available. Calidum T|C 04:17, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- Split apart and replace with disambiguation page. per nom. WP:COATRACK The Canada content should be split off into a Canada article. The New England content should go to the Down East (Maine) title. -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 09:12, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- Down East (Canada) was a sourced stub article, but was blanked and redirected to Maritimes article. I can see plenty of Canadian sources referring to "Down East" as Canadian "Down East" not including Maine so not sure about the above argument. In ictu oculi (talk) 11:32, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- Are there any that are actually about the term, rather than just using it? I'm having trouble finding any.--Cúchullain t/c 16:28, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- The problem was that "Down East (Canada)" was just a dictionary definition of a term, which didn't — and still doesn't — warrant a separate article from the one that already exists about the region that the term refers to. There's literally nothing that can be said about the Canadian usage of "down east" that warrants a separate article about it as a separate topic from the Atlantic Provinces. Bearcat (talk) 19:17, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- Agree with User:Bearcat. So should Wikipedia attempt to serve non-Maine readers or not? In ictu oculi (talk) 20:55, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
- I'm not suggesting that's not a worthy goal — but it's important that we pick the best way to do the necessary service, and I've yet to be convinced that the "best way" in this instance isn't to just rewrite this article for improved clarity, rather than creating new pages of dubious actual utility. Bearcat (talk) 20:59, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
- I took a stab at it based on several dictionaries and two books I have access to.--Cúchullain t/c 22:44, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

- Oppose - Canadian Maritimes and Maine can, and should, be both addressed in this article. Splitting them into two articles is pointless and potentially confusing. The North Carolina term is much less common and the magazine, while much-referenced, is of course separate. Down East (disambiguation) can clear up any possible confusion. - DavidWBrooks (talk) 23:24, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose. Perhaps I'm biased because I'm much more familiar with the Maine region than the North Carolina region, but then I suspect I'm not in the minority in that regard. There is not enough content in this article, which is barely larger than a stub, to merit a split. If the content is significantly expanded, maybe then a split could be considered. Up north, out west, down south...
[edit]I grew up in south-west Ontario, and I had never heard of this 'downeast' version. To us, it was a point of direction 'down east', although this does not really hold until you're leaving from Quebec City... Q8682 (talk) 10:20, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Interesting. Can you find its use in a publication or something that you can link to? - DavidWBrooks (talk) 11:54, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
