Dowhill Castle
Dowhill Castle
  • ... that the great hall of Dowhill Castle (pictured) had a hatch in its floor leading to a pit used as a prison? "The first floor, to which level the castle is now reduced, contained a single chamber, the Hall ... in the floor is a hatch forming the only entrance to a 'pit' or mural prison that lies below. The 'pit' has a small opening for ventilation, a lamp recess, and a urinal." from: "Dowhill Castle". Canmore - National Record of the Historic Environment. Historic Environment Scotland. Article is long enough and new enough with in-line citation; no sourcing, copyright, or content issues were found. Hook has good source and meets length and format criterion. QPQ was done. Image is CC BY-SA 2.0 with required attribution included so image is appropriate for Wikipedia; rollover tag is also good.--Orygun (talk) 03:16, 4 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reading now! --Jens Lallensack (talk) 21:30, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sited on a hill near Loch Leven the oldest part of the castle was built in around 1500 as a tower house. – I suggest to set a comma behind "Loch Leven"
Added. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 12:41, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Set into the floor was a hatch that provided access to a pit used as a prison. – Not clear to me where this would have been; within one of the walls?
MacGibbon confirms this was in the thickness of the wall and was accessed from a closet. I've added detail, but I feel it may be a bit clunky. Happy to take suggestions on improvements - Dumelow (talk) 22:37, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • 5 feet 3 inches (1.60 m) thick – In the remainder of the article, you use SI units as main units. This inconsistency here irritates a bit.
I tend to give the units from the source first, but this may well not be MOS compliant. Happy to go with whichever. Pickersgill-Cunliffe, any preference? - Dumelow (talk) 22:37, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've switched them around so that it mirrors the other conversions. Don't think the change makes much difference considering the figures aren't that highly precise. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 12:41, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • The main structure was extended in around 1600 with additional living space added – "extended" and "added" read somewhat repetitive.
Rejigged slightly Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 12:41, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • The site was owned for many years by the Crambeth family before passing to the Lindsay family at the end of the fourteenth century. – Shouldn't the lead state here that the castle was built by the latter family?
Added. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 12:41, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • The map is very helpful, but this reconstructed red line does not show any entry; I guess because its exact location is unknown?
Yep, it's taken from two sources neither of which indicates a location for the entrance to the barmkin - Dumelow (talk) 22:37, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Optional: I suggest to provide weblinks, there seem to be some interesting ones with nice pictures.
Agreed, it's a shame we don't have one of the south elevation, which is quite imposing, or the impressive vaults. I've added a link to the Scottish Castles Association page which has these plus a nice one of the blocked up southern entrance. Happy for more to be added - Dumelow (talk) 22:41, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
