Facts:
- Reign started in 1039, at his father's death. [1]
- Date of birth unclear, but described as "adolescent" at time of death. [1]
- Based in Vlaardingen. His court there no longer exists. [1]
- Contemporary historians referred to him (in Latin) as "Theodericus de Phlardirtinga" (Vlaardingen). [1]
- Contemporary historians referred to him as margrave of Vlaardingen. [1]
- Continued his father's policy of developing and colonizing the low-lying peat areas of Holland and Utrecht. [1]
- This brought him into conflict with bishops of Utrecht and Liege. [1]
- General tendency for independence from the emperor, Henry III. [1]
- The Emperor instigated three expeditions against him, one beginning spring 1046, one beginning late summer 1047 and one taking place in the winter of 1048-1049. [1]
