It'll be Alright on the Night—Was it really spelled "Alright"?

Seems crazy to me (and I'm an American, fer cryin' out loud).

Nonetheless, the "correct" spelling (all right) is unknown on Wikipedia. So I guess -- never having seen the show -- that it is/was "alright".

And dats ok wit me, boss.

I think, you might say unusually, that the less proper "alright" is more acceptable in Britain than the US. Beanhead McGinty 13:18, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it was indeed spelled "Alright" in the title of the show. Flapdragon 16:01, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As Denis himself put it " if one L is good enough for the Almighty then it is good enough for me". 201182.42.121.120 (talk) 17:15, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

His daughter

[edit]

His daughter "Maggie" is both his son and his daughter? What? This article really needs sorting out. NaiveAmoeba 21:09, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Norden-spotting

[edit]

Due to his very visible prescence on the streets of the West End of London and continued sightings of him by office workers thereabouts there has sprung up a game called Norden in which office workers relate which celebrities they have seen recently and points are awarded for them.

Really? He's 85, does he really get out all that much? (Not sure about "thereabouts there" either.) Anyway unless there's some proper source for this not very encyclopaedic comment it should probably go. Flapdragon 16:05, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Introducing horror films in mid to late 90s

[edit]

I can't find a reference but if I recall correctly a presenter in a devil or demon mask with similar voice and physical appearance to Denis Norden introducing horror films on the BBC. Does that ring a bell or have I got him confused with someone else? Pleasetry (talk) 03:03, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That was Dr Walpurgis - nothing to do with NordenTheMathemagician (talk) 21:20, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I remember him for the cleverest joke I ever heard, when he said that Mr Decarte told a companion under the table at midnight re. Mrs Decarte's New Year cakes "I think they're for 1 a.m." Well done, that man.92.176.83.212 (talk) 08:13, 28 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Very impressive

[edit]

This article deserves to be commended for showing what an up-to-date encyclopedia Wikipedia is. It was announced on the news this morning that Dennis Norden has died, and already his date of death is in the article - it is only 8: 40 a.m. in Britain on September 19 2018, and already his death is given as September 19 2018. Vorbee (talk) 07:42, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

He was very well-known in the UK but also closely associated with the BBC, so I guess they got the news in time to put it out on the early news.Deb (talk) 17:39, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Smoking

Norden was a heavy heavy smoker for most of his life. Is that what caused his blindness? (ManyMoonsoons (talk) 08:40, 19 September 2018 (UTC))[reply]

That would seem quite likely, looking at macular degeneration. But I can find no definitive source to support that suggestion. For example, smoking is not mentioned at all here, where the condition is described purely as "age-related". Martinevans123 (talk) 11:41, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Citation

[edit]

@Ad Orientem:, what additional citations do you feel are needed? Deb (talk) 17:39, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like someone has added some additional tags. But I see a number of longish paragraphs with multiple claims of fact and very few citations. I had been thinking about nominating this article at WP:ITNC for the Recent Deaths section on the main page. But in its current state it has no chance of passing. -Ad Orientem (talk) 20:00, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Born Cohen

[edit]

We have him born Denis Norden. There are plenty of ref with stuff like "Denis Norden was born on 6 February 1922 in Hackney, east London, to George Norden and Jenny Lubell". Actually he won born Denis Cohen (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV3C-PZ42) the son of George Cohen and Jennie (nee Lubell) who were married in 1920 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:26LG-R4D https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:26LB-SBR). He had become a Norden by the time of his marriage in 1943 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV8Y-QB8G). Perhaps not worth fussing about, just noting here for posterity. Nigej (talk) 14:03, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

His entry in the ODNB was only published a couple of weeks ago and confirms this. It says his father changed the family name to Norden by Deed Poll in 1930. I have added this to the article.Crisso (talk) 11:05, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
