The Gadsden purchase - shown in green - actually extends further north than the 32nd parallel portion of the New Mexico border. There should be little to none of the yellow area. Until Gadsden, going west, New Mexico Territory's border jogged northward at the Rio Grande before continuing westward. Therefore, as the text remarks, the Gadsden purchase created a 12 mile border between NMT and Texas, creating the boundary dispute that New Mexico raised, as a state, after 1912.
