Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
The article says the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act provides consumer protections. I've read the relevant sections of The Act and it is a license to give patient information away. The best I can tell, the Act appears to have codified existing industry practices; and not place controls to promote patient rights or privacy. I refuse to sign anything related to HIPPA when I visit a doctor. The Act is that bad.
With that said, I think it is disingenuous to claim HIPPA is a vehicle for consumer protection.
