Orphaned references in Chennai

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Chennai's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Under the History title, the 4th paragraph reads: "The Portuguese first arrived in 1522 and built a port called São Tomé after the Christian apostle, St. Thomas, who is believed to have preached in the area between 52 and 70 CE. In 1612, the Dutch established themselves near Pulicat, north of Chennai.[52]"

Reasoning behind edit: I believe this first sentence omits an extremely noteworthy christian (and potential tourism/pilgrimage) point of interest that St. Thomas is also believed to have died at St. Thomas Mount (Parangimalai) in 72 CE, which is a small hillock in Chennai. (obviously the 70 CE needs to be changed to 72 CE which is considered more accurate).

My proposed edit: "The Portuguese first arrived in 1522 and built a port called São Tomé after the Christian apostle, St. Thomas, who is believed to have preached in the area from 52 CE until his death on St. Thomas Mount (Parangimalai) in 72 CE."

Also, in this sentence, the words "St. Thomas Mount (Parangimalai)" would include a hyperlink to the wiki article http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/St._Thomas_Mount .

I didn't find in the source in the article that he "preached in the area from 52 CE until his death on St. Thomas Mount (Parangimalai) in 72 CE" I would recommend reviewing the source provided in the article in case I made a mistake or providing a new reliable source to support this claim. Pronunciation Guide

In the audio pronunciation of "Madras" in the very first line, the "r" is rolled. That's how North Indians, or Hindi-speakers pronounced Madras, but South Indians, particularly long-time residents of the city, would pronounce it with a soft "r". Changing settlement type to Metropolis from Megacity

Regarding the Neutrality tag in Chennai article

There are many statements in the lead section itself that are promotional and advertising in nature. They aren't adhering to WP:Neutral point of view. Please note that the lead section is the most-read section in any article. The Lead should be an unreferenced summary of referenced statements. This article's lead section is written like an Advertisement. Please read this WP:Advertisement

Some of the issues in the lead are

  • "Biggest educational and economic centre in South India" - promotional, biased and vague statement - What about Bangalore?
  • "Chennai is the safest city in India" - Advertisement in the lead and subjective. Several cities with reliable sources claim to be the safest in India. But they don't mention it in Wikipedia.
  • "Chennai was ranked the best city in India" - Advertisement in the lead
  • "Ninth cosmopolitan city in the world" - Advertisement and promotional in the lead

This is just a sample, and there are few other promotional marketing statements in the lead itself such as

  • "India's health capital"
  • "city worth visiting and worth living in for long term", etc.

So clearly looking at just the Lead section alone, this article isn't adhering to WP:Neutral point of view.

Should we remove the nickname "The Detroit of India" from the lede?

Wikipedia is for a global audience, so it sounds very American-centric to list this as a nickname in the article's lede (3rd paragraph). The US government is cited as the source for this nickname, but it would likely not be used by anyone outside America, and we don't know how common its usage even is. Additionally, it sounds very dated, and I doubt even modern Americans would find this phrase relevant.Pythagimedes (talk) 22:34, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

@Pythagimedes If you scroll down to Economy section, you can see that it has 4 citations in total, one each from US Department of Commerce, US ITC, The Economist newspapar and another book. History Siege of Madras 1758-59: Who was in charge?

The British "resisted a French siege attempt in 1759 under the leadership of Eyre Coote.[63]" If someone with greater expertise could review this issue, I believe Lawrence Stringer, along with the governor, Pigot, and the council may have actually had command. Eyre Coote did not arrive in India until after the siege of Madras had been lifted, so he was most definitely not in charge of the garrison. Wendigo Lake (talk) 14:41, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

The Portuguese, who arrived in the area in the 16th century, named the village Madre de Deus. The Portuguese built a church and named it as Madre de Deus ( Mother of God,, in Portuguese Madre- Mother, de -of, Deus -God) Church. The church is still in existence,behind the St George's Fort. Construction of Wonderla amusement park has been delayed significantly by COVID and related factors, so this information needs to be updated with current sources. This is a lead statement that reflects several other supportive statements within the article that are backed by reliable sources. Although the "largeness" of a city may vary from decade to decade since population of cities fluctuate constantly, the traditional influence and importance of a city in a particular region remain fairly constant for a much greater period (several centuries or even millennia). The population of London, for example, has fluctuated several times in the past century and it may not be "the largest city" per se, but its importance remains fairly constant throughout history. Portuguese possible Etymology of Madras?

The article mentions two portuguese phrases that could be the origin for the name Madras: "Mãe de Deus" and "Madre de Dios", but the first one doesn't have the actual "Madr-" sound and the second one is not a portuguese phrase at all, but spanish. Portuguese "Deus" derives from the same latin word - "Deus" - and the variant "Dios" was never used in portuguese, only spanish. Also, none of the two phrases are actually mentioned in the source provided, but "Madre de Deus", which is a correct phrase, since "Madre" does exist in portuguese as an alternative and archaic form of "mother" (the word actually used most of the time is "Mãe"). The article would benefit from a little addition of the Bombardment of Madras (1914) in the history section

In 1914 the German cruiser Emden bombarded the oil tanks in Madras and set them aflame, killing some civilians and damaging structures in the city. The ship got away completely unscathed despite being shelled from shore batteries in Madras. Someone with more Wikipedia expertise could add this as I am inexperienced.
