Name

[edit]

@AntonSamuel: This is an Azerbaijani village and the name "Charektar" and "Charakdar" are almost same, but changed to match the actual spelling better (just like how we chose "Haterk" over "Aterk" even though Aterk was the common name). If we're going by this, (which isn't right per WP:MODERNPLACENAME) then we'd have to change a lot of names of villages in Armenia to their Azerbaijani names, which are WP:COMMONNAME and change to wrong spellings that are common name (e.g. Haterk). I'd rather not open this rabbit hole. — CuriousGolden (T·C) 09:51, 14 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@CuriousGolden: As pretty much every village in Armenia and Azerbaijan has its own historical context and background - it's probably best that each village is dealt with on its own when controversy arise as has been suggested by admins previously. With the lack of a naming convention for Nagorno-Karabakh, article titles are still mainly determined by the common name of the locality - if you think that there is sufficient ground to move the article to "Charakdar", I would recommend you to open up a move discussion to bring in input from other editors. I don't believe that it would be prudent for this village though as so many reliable contemporary sources utilize "Charektar", for example Reuters and The Guardian, while usage of "Charekdar" is very low (35 results for Charakdar vs 17,900 results for Charektar on Google) - this is not the case for Haterk vs Aterk (the Russian transliteration of the Armenian name). AntonSamuel (talk) 10:04, 14 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This is indeed is the same case as Aterk/Haterk. "Charektar" is the Russian spelling of "Charakdar", it is the exact same name (looks different, but sounds the same when you say it). You can see this in the Russian Wikipedia article, where most of the time both Armenian and Azerbaijani name are written, but in this case, it's not as they're both the same name but with Russian spelling. Not sure why we apply the same policy to an Armenian-inhabited village, but not to an Azerbaijani one. WP:MODERNPLACENAME tells us to use the modern name/spelling of the village and in this case, "Charakdar" is the modern spelling as "Charektar" is the same, but Soviet spelling. — CuriousGolden (T·C) 10:08, 14 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Considering the aforementioned statistics and sources and that "Charektar" is used by the de facto administration of the village and its current inhabitants, I would say a move discussion would be more than prudent if you think that "Charekdar" would be a better/more correct article title, just as there was a move discussion for Haterk which had a pre-war Armenian majority. You can ping an admin if you want more input on the matter, but I suspect that a move discussion would be the recommendation that would be given for this case. So does that mean that the Armenian residents of the village no longer inhabit the village? AntonSamuel (talk) 21:14, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know that but it is no longer in the hands of artsakh, it is in the hands of Azerbaijan. Death Editor 2 (talk) 21:19, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So can you change the fucking article now? Death Editor 2 (talk) 22:00, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
