- Both are suburbs which are not well known outside their own cities/counties. Also found out that there is a town in the US that has gone to the unusual step of naming itself after them. josh 11:16, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
Note that per the naming conventions, if a disambig is needed, this page should be moved to Chapeltown, West Yorkshire. Vclaw 13:57, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
This article has been renamed as the result of a move request. Or otherwise sorted out. Everyone appears happy enough with Chapeltown as a dab page. –Hajor 03:24, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
Social problems
[edit]"Chapeltown suffers serious social problems, including a high rise in gun crime in recent years, and has long been considered one of the city's worst districts."
I personally don't consider it the worst district in the city. I also don't have any increased personal safety issues in the area - no more than I would have for any other area of any major city. Does this comment conitnue to be relevant when it seems related to riots which occured 25+ years ago.

As someone who lives in the area, christ believe me the area has problems. You'd have to have a death wish to leave your house after dark, if you did you'd probably be burgled. It is the only area of Leeds really to have gun crime on the scale that's seen in the worst areas of Nottingham, Manchester and London. The gun crime is so out of hand, its even forced away the local vice industry because its too dangerous for call girls to walk the streets. They could probably have another riot and convince us it was a regeneration scheme. Despite what the council and a hand full of 'optimistic' residents say, Harehills and Chapeltown are still very much no go areas. A flat share with hanibal lector would be better digs then anything you could get in Chapeltown. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.8.27.125 (talk) 17:24, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
gun crime
[edit]^^^ Twat!! How pathetic there's hardly any gun crime in Leeds for a long time now and nottingham has hardly any gun crime so why mention theyre gun crime hotspots when clearly there not 2008!! There's 4 major gun crime hotspots in Britain and Leeds and Nottingham are not one of them two gun crime hotspots are London and Birmingham.I suggest it should be removed about being a gun crime hotspot since gun crime is very rare there and thats what the police and local peple in the area want so if they keep on saying it's a high gun crime spot when it clearly isn't then it's gonna have a bad stigma and possibly gangs and criminals going there to commit crime so remove now ffs —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.47.180.251 (talk • contribs)
In response to the discussion of gun crime here I have rearranged the Chapeltown page, placing the reference to gun crime and riots in the context of a small crime section further down the page. I have reworded the sentences slightly and added references to pertinent news stories where I could find them. I am not qualified to know the current crime levels in this area - so I have not changed these negative points beyond these minor tweaks. Hopefully, however, the crime history will no longer be the defining characteristic in the article of an area that has a lot else to be known for. --Noii (talk) 23:57, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
There seems to be an agenda to push here. Regardless of what people want, there are these problems in Chapeltown. Yes areas of South London, Birmingham and Nottingham may have worse problems, but anyone with a vauge knowldge of Chapeltown knows its problems. There have been an above average number of incidents involving guns, even for a similar inner city area. To not mention this would be missing perhaps the most notable issue in Chapeltown, whatever is written should be written clearly, unambigously and neutrally with citations made. To the originating commenter, Grow up. Language Timothy! Mtaylor848 (talk)
Sorry mate. I wasn't intentionally pushing an agenda. It just seemed to me that the area was being portrayed as rougher than my experience of it. A lot of the news article references I ran across and added also seemed to imply that crime rates have been falling in Chapeltown. Having said that, I'm quite new to living here, so I'm no expert. My experiences of living in London however make me think that you can't describe the character of an area - Brixton is a good example - primarily by a few sporadic events of social unrest. visit by Nelson Mandela
[edit]There should be some mention of the visit by Nelson Mandela to Chapeltown. Most of the sources that I can find online are of his visit to Leeds in general example but I can't find much on his visit to Chapeltown. I'll have to do some offline research. The date of his visit is given on a plaque somewhere in the area - perhaps the big C that welcomes you to Chapeltown. Epa101 (talk) 19:52, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

Carnival start date
[edit]The article states that "Leeds Carnival started in 1967 and predates that of Notting Hill", however the article about Notting Hill Carnival says that has been going since 1966. Mark and inwardly digest (talk) 15:04, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
