Viet Nam War Hero

Alma is the birthplace of Homer Leroy Smith a 1949 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. His is a story of valor. While commanding office of VA-212 flying a AGM-12 (Bullpup), he spent two days of intense, secret operations. He was shot down 25 miles northeast of Hanoi on May 20, 1967 and after a day of torture died on May 21, 1967.

His father was Lotus, Smith who worked their farm and was the local barber. His mother died when Homer was 12. He attended Tyler County High School and took classes at Bethany College.
