Cairo-Cape Town Highway Move
[edit]I have moved the Cairo-Cape Town Highway to a separate page and removed the “route” from the current page. TapticInfo (talk) 20:04, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
- I don't consider it necessary to have a separate article, and have proposed merger. The Cape to Cairo Road page covers the same topic. — Amakuru (talk) 17:19, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
Well, from the notes on both the pages, it is clear that the "Cape to Cairo Road" (a historical plan during colonial times to connect British colonies) and the "Cairo-Cape Town Highway" (one of the United Nations & African Union routes through Africa) have a few differences (i.e. One passes through Ethiopia and the other one doesn't; One passes through Botswana and the other one doesn't; In Tanzania, one passes through Dodoma while the other uses a longer, more easterly route through the nation between Iringa and Arusha). Apart from these few differences, they use the same roads for much of their routes. So, if we were to merge the two pages, we would need to clearly give each road its own sections and subsections on the page, while finding a way to introduce BOTH sections in the introductory area. Looking at how the page was before the separation, I also don't think it is necessary to have the two pages separated. Chils Kemptonian (talk) 22:16, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
- Support the merge, but think that merging to the modern name (Cairo–Cape Town Highway), for the road that actually exists, would be better. Klbrain (talk) 00:20, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
- Support; I believe it would be alright if we took it back to the way it was, where the "Cairo-Cape Town Highway" had a section inside the "Cape to Cairo Road" article. I think there is no need for the two roads to have separate articles, as they both describe a "Cape to Cairo" route and use the same roads for much of their routes (they are not too different). - @Amakuru, at the moment, everything written in the Cairo–Cape Town Highway article has been "squeezed" into the "Cairo–Cape Town Highway" section of the Cape to Cairo Road article. So, it is safe to say all the content that is in the Cairo–Cape Town Highway article already fits well into the Cape to Cairo Road article & I am still in Support of re-merging the two articles.
- I specifically suggest that the Cairo–Cape Town Highway article should just be "Blanked" & then redirected to the Cape to Cairo Road article.
- This discussion has taken half-a-year so far & so, I attempted to bring it up at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Highways talk page & even there, two users so far have stated that "the two articles are talking about the same thing". They also recommend "bold editing" as opposed to a discussion for this reason. GeographicAccountant (talk) 11:01, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- The article about the historical plan should be merged into the article about the current road. It's important for the title, infobox, and lede to reflect the road as it exists today. We should add the History and Original route sections to the Cairo–Cape Town Highway, then split Background into Original route > Differences with modern route and History. Is this OK to you? Galagora (talk) 19:50, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
- Sure, that would work too. GeographicAccountant (talk) 22:07, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
- Merger complete. Galagora (talk) 22:47, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
