Indy 1955 death of Vikovivich

[edit]

I was a child of 7 when this happened. If you weren't there you listened on the Radio. I lived in an Indy suburb. The main reason I have a memory of it was an upset comment my dad made about a 1/2 page newspaper ad in either the Star or News. It was "a tempting fate" sort ot coincidence that you look back on as a curse (common sort of superstition "don't jinx it by saying anything" in sports) I do remember how spectacular a crash this was because his showing me this ad with anguish and anger that it had appeared. Vukovich had an ad sponsored by a gasoline company saying, "Watch Bill Vukovich. He'll be riding on [xxx gallons of YYY gas!" Vukovich was a favorite to win. My dad said "I'll bet that company regrets that ad now." I think he was referring to negative publicity, not a curse. But it is linked forever in my memory. --- submitted by 75 year-old ear & print wittness. indianabarnes451@gmail.com [ Sleeping Dog] K.C.
