A Note on Sources

[edit]

When I revised and expanded this article in 2009, I neglected to include footnotes, for which I apologize. I will add citations to this article as time permits. In the meantime (from memory):

  • Information on the founders of Batavia Institute came from the original Charter (February 1853, p. 1), now located in the Archives at Beloit College in Wisconsin.
  • Information on the structure itself came from the National Register Information System (NRIS) and the National Register of Historic Places Nomination Form.
  • The wonderful details on the bid for the first Illinois normal school in 1857 came from a published history of Illinois State University (Normal, Illinois).
  • Information on the later occupants of (and uses for) the building came from various sources, mainly Historic Batavia (1998) by Marilyn Robinson and Jeffery D. Schielke; the NRIS; and the National Register of Historic Places Nomination Form.
