Neonatal specimen
[edit]Article comments that calving season seems to be summer/autumn off New Zealand. It must also be off the coast of Tasmania, since I discovered and photographed a neonatal Andrews' Beaked Whale at Ocean Beach, Macquarie Heads, near Strahan, Tasmania, on 11 January 2006, at about 8.55am. It was dead, having been beachwashed during the night. I believe this is the first time neonatal ABWs have been photographed. At the time I took the photos which I have uploaded to Wikipedia Commons, the animal was fairly natural in coloration. By the time the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service took charge of the specimen later in the day, major discoloration had occurred (the specimen became suffused with red). The identity was not established for several months until extensive DNA testing had confirmed it was an Andrews' Beaked Whale, neonatal. I kept in touch with the authorities who informed me of this. The photos may be accessed at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andrews%27_Beaked_Whale_neonatal_head.JPG and at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andrews%27_Beaked_Whale_(neonate,_beachwashed).JPG .
