Mention of David Bowie in the death section

I'm as sad about Bowie's death as the next person, but is it really relevant to mention here? I could understand if the two were good friends, but from what I know of both men, the only thing they had in common was that they were British and 69. The way it's written right now, it looks like Rickman's family said "he died about 4 days after David Bowie," and from what I can find, that is simply not the case, especially in the article used as the source for that line. Hirachio11 (talk) 14:41, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Apparently I'm not the only one who thought this, as someone already took care of it while I was writing this. Good show.Hirachio11 (talk) 14:43, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
It's completely irrelevant. If they were related, perhaps, or had something particular in common; but as it stands, it's just been a blody unfortunate week for film / music fans of a certain vintage. And anyone else of course. Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi 14:46, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Please change the introduction "Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman (born 21 February 1946)" to "Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman (21 February 1946 - 14 January 2016)"

Please change the biographical bar on the right-side of the screen, and add a section that says "Died 14 January 2016 (age 69)"

Public records, including the New York Times and British Broadcasting Corporation, indicate he has passed away after a battle with cancer.

Death Hoax

Alan Rickman died today... Did anyone else hear about this hoax? I remember many many months ago hearing that phrase on local radio and television news, both stating that Rickman died. Apparently so did some other people, judging by some of the the reverts (although most of the reverts have the DOD as very recent, not months ago). I remember thinking "they'll have a hell of a time getting a replacement for the Harry Potter movies," until IMDB and Wikipedia, with lack of other media coverage, convinced me otherwise. Does anyone have more info? I lack dates and references, and I found nothing on Google or Snopes. If anyone else can corroborate this hoax, I think it should be included with the main article. Durty Willy 01:17, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

He keeps his personal life .. personal, so it's quite hard to build an unbias encyclopedic entry about the in's-and-out's of it. Like has been said, he had no children and has been romantically involved with the same woman since the 60's I believe. He is rumoured to be asexual, but has never openly said it, to my knowledge (perhaps due to "asexuality" only coming to the mainstream nowadays, if anything).

All rumors of death will eventually become true, sadly. Not a hoax anymore as of today. 2601:283:4302:6680:388A:DD00:79D7:D1A3 (talk) 15:37, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Harry Potter And the Philosopher's Stone? Sorcerer's. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.255.14.107 (talk) 13:53, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Correct; while "Philosopher's" was the original British title of the book the film was based on, the film has only ever been titled "Sorcerer's." 2601:283:4302:6680:388A:DD00:79D7:D1A3 (talk) 15:44, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
No it hasn't. As the table states. Right there next to the title. Mezigue (talk) 15:50, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Incorrect. In the UK the film was titled the same as the book was: Philosoher's. -Jason A. Quest (talk) 15:51, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Regarding edit requests about Rickman's death

Please take note: the mobile version of Wikipedia often displays a cached version of the page you are viewing, especially when the page is being frequently updated. The date and known information of Alan Rickman's death has been on this page for several hours now. Please refrain from submitting edit requests stating that Alan Rickman has died, pretty much everybody's aware of it now and it's just cluttering up the page. If you're looking at the article and it doesn't say that he's died, either refresh the page, clear your cache, or switch to the desktop view of the article. I promise it's there. Thank you. Hirachio11 (talk) 17:22, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

I wondered if a template could be made, or the existing 'recent death' one could be ammended, informing mobile users that the page has already been updated etc? So they see that instead of coming here. Although I supose that wouldn't show up either! Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi 17:27, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
I don't see the necessity of a template as one could always purge the page cache after performing a substantial edit. -- Chamith (talk) 17:31, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
I agree. The point I was making is that people do not seem to understand that. And therefore perhaps we could assist our client base by pointing this out to them. With the added bonus that we do not then receive a load of unecessary sodding edit-requests. Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi 18:39, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
I came here from desktop (OS X) and got the out-of-date page as well, and I've never surfed to his page before, as an FYI. Could explain why so many people are showing up with this issue. Rhynri (talk) 18:42, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Purging clears the page's server cache, not your browser's cache. But as you said you've never visited this page and the page displayed to you is still outdated, then it's most likely due to Five-minute rule (if it's employed in Wikimedia servers) and/or network congestion. -- Chamith (talk) 19:02, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
I came here on Firefox, Windows 7 and got a cached version of the page as well. Never been to this page before. Rip-Saw (talk) 21:16, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Rhynri, User:Rip-Saw - this is a feature of caching at the (web) server (rather than a feature/bug at the (browser) client) see client-server and Wikipedia:Purge. Widefox; talk 10:26, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
User:ChamithN this is nothing to do with network congestion. Widefox; talk 10:32, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
@Widefox: Yeah, I agree and retract my initial point about network congestion. Network congestion affects the quality of a node, not the quality of the content on the page. I just don't see why anybody would see an outdated version of the page even after purging the cache. -- Chamith (talk) 12:35, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
To add, I purged the page multiple times before Rip-Saw reported that s/he is seeing an outdated version. So purging is out of the question here. -- Chamith (talk) 12:38, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
Of course, nowadays things may not be as simple as client-server - we are already talking 2 servers here (DB and caching front-end) but ISPs may be caching in the middle (as allowed by http, or more aggressively than standards allow). Widefox; talk 15:38, 16 January 2016 (UTC)

Info about siblings

I think the info about his siblings should be left alone, at least. Other people have worked hard on those edits in the last years, no one had a problem with it before, and yet it's just now being removed??? Maybe if it were cut down a bit, like education isn't necessary, it could be left. Their birth dates and occupations are even mentioned in Paton's book, weirdly an accepted source here given its an unauthorised biography by a tabloid writer. That information has always been here since the late 2000s??? Besides, Mike being a Councillor for the Harborough District and Sheila's married name, "Innes" has been mentioned in countless news articles from top news outlets since Rickman's death. It should be mentioned here too. And would it please be okay to keep his parents' birth and death dates? 76.0.226.234 (talk) 00:35, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

76.0.226.234 Even if something's been here forever, that does not preclude the removal of data that fails our notability guidelines (please actually read that). Meantime, of course news articles try to fill in as much detail as possible; that's their purpose. Our purpose as an encyclopedia is to include anything and everything reliably sourced that also satisfies encyclopedic policy, of which notability is an integral part (please actually read that, too). Rickman's article is not an obituary; it is a collection of encyclopedic fact. Mike being a councillor for Harborough District? Nice—but what's it to do with Alan? Pertinent to his career? His family's standing? If not, it goes. Sheila married an Innes? Utterly irrelevant. Parents' birth/death years have been considered acceptable if presented with the proper brevity; say, for example, Bernard William Rickman (1914 – 1954). If you believe you can trim better than I did and leave behind only the encyclopedic then, by all means, do so; otherwise, our policy dictates its removal. Anything that does not serve to answer the question "Why is this detail in this article?" gives itself undue weight (and, yes, please actually read that, too). —ATS 🖖 Talk 00:57, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Meantime, I've made this edit per WP:N and WP:UNDUE—specifically, non-notable family response (never mind verbatim) to notable condolences. I nearly removed it completely for these reasons, and I have a feeling someone will anyway. —ATS 🖖 Talk 22:23, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

In the fourth line of early life, a quotation is introduced as "according to Paton". Who (or even what) "Paton" is hasn't been explained at this point. Not sure languid is the right word

"Known for his deep, languid voice" is the opener to this article, but languid doesn't seem to be the right word. I'd say deep and resonant[1], as written in this Vox article, or deep and possessing gravitas. Languid colloquially means slowly or lacking energy, which I don't think is the point of that opening. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Milliquas (talkcontribs) 23:05, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

Suggest punctuation change

Personally I think languid perfectly describes some of Alan's performances (Diehard?) but an adjective for that voice is difficult to nail.

My problem with the opening is the way it's put. This bit

"Known for his deep, languid voice, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art"

is just plain silly. (we just adore your deep languid voice here at RADA darling...) It suggests that he was renowned for his voice before or during RADA, which is categorically false anyway. And it reads like a brochure.

Should be

"was an English actor and director known for his deep, languid voice. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art"

or, pedantically

"was an English actor known for his deep, languid voice and also a director. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2405:9800:B900:BC89:6085:B7EA:930C:76A4 (talk) 20:47, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

Bottle Shock

You must see "Bottle Shock", (2008). Based on a true story, Alan Rickman played the leading role of Steven Spurrier, the catalyst who put California wines and the Montelena winery on the map. The movie is a hidden gem with an amazing score and the beautiful scenery of the Napa Valley, artfully depicted as it was in the early seventies. Rickman's portrayal of Spurrier is the focal point of the movie, with Bill Pullman as Montelena's owner, Jim Barrett, and Chris Pine as his son, Bo Barrett, bringing together a one-of-a-kind, unforgettable story of uncommon beauty, romance, and struggle that led to triumph. 2600:6C4E:327F:FEA7:74A6:5430:EC9E:CCF0 (talk) 14:54, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
