Literal meaning?

[edit]

What is the literal meaning of "Alabama" or "Alibamu" in that tribe's language? Badagnani 08:38, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to George R. Stewart's book "Names on the Land", it comes from a phrase meaning something like "thicket-clearers", suggesting a history of agriculture and land clearing -- although it is possible it was poorly translated, rendered by the French into the roman alphabet, and may have applied to some smaller group rather than what became known as the Alabama people, I'm not sure. That's in the Choctaw language, not in the Alabama language. Alabama just means "Alabama" – like Japan means "Japan". Names don't always have meaningful subcomponents that can be analyzed. – ishwar  (speak) 12:28, 22 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

semi protection

[edit]

Is it worth getting semi protection on this page until the IP vandal based around 68.63.13.xx has gone to bed?? --RedHillian 02:20, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I note we have more vandal attacks again, from IPs that all also trace back to Mobile, Alabama. --RedHillian 17:15, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It will probably be done with at the end of the school day.Phantombantam 19:21, 31 January 2007 (

Students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be working on this page over the course of the semester. We will be discussing the gaming rights of the Alabama-Coushatta tribe specifically.--LogDawson (talk) 13:24, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alabama_people#Ethnobotany

[edit]

It seems somewhat inappropriate and not really encyclopedic to me to just list off one of the Albaamaha's medicinal plants and then link to a list of plants they use. Also not very helpful. Instead, it would seem better practice to have a a more general description of their ethnobotany since this is an encyclopedia.

I'm don't know enough about the Albaamaha or their ethnobotany to revise this section, but I felt it worth mentioning on the talk page at least. I also feel like it would be appropriate for me to remove the link to a list of their medicinal plants, because it doesn't seem very appropriate or helpful in this context.
