Tax Resistance
[edit]Addiopizzo has been added to the "Tax resistance" set of pages, and I've tried to add the sidebar for that set to this page without success. The last reversion said something to the extent that extortion is not a tax, but indeed this is the very thing at issue in many examples of tax resistance, and extortion and taxation if they are not indeed names for the same thing are certainly shades on the same continuum, and resistance to taxation often takes place when it is interpreted by those being taxed as extortion. The pizzo, being something regularly exacted at consistent rates over a long period of time by an enduring institution, indeed bears more of a resemblance to a tax than to most varieties of extortion which are more sporadic, irregular, haphazard, and inconsistent. -— (talk) 02:15, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
- I've removed it. I'm no expert on this topic, but it appears to me that the pizzo is generally characterised as a form of criminal extortion rather than a tax as such. It may operate in a similar way in practice, but it isn't sanctioned or regulated by any law (indeed, it's illegal), whereas tax is by definition a legal obligation. So, this doesn't fall under the category of 'tax resistance' to my eyes. Robofish (talk) 16:29, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
- I'd recommend adding it back. Often in tax resistance campaigns, the legitimacy or legality of the tax is the very thing at issue, so the fact that the pizzo is more blatantly illegitimate than many other taxes doesn't really put resistance to the pizzo outside of the realm of tax resistance in general. —Moorlock (talk) 02:27, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
