"Dutch (Canadian) father and Hungarian (Canadian) mother"
[edit]The text, and the cited National Post article, put it this way:
- Van Koeverden, the thoughtful and articulate son of a Dutch father and Hungarian mother, will walk in holding the flag but he tries to walk the walk on many levels of his life.
But elsewhere in the article he says
- “Both my parents are immigrants and came to Canada to find a better life,” said world and Olympic champion kayaker Adam van Koeverden of Mississauga, Ont., about what this moment means to his family.
- “I was born in Canada but I consider myself an immigrant and now people associate me with the flag.
And, in terms of "what it is to be Canadian", all immigrants, including his father and mother and himself, in his own estimation, are Canadians. Clearly the Post is meaning those national terms, here linked to the countries in question, are meant to be taken in the ethnic origin sense only; even if they are/remain dual citizens of Holland and Hungary, they're still CAnadians. I'm not into flag waving nor hyphenated Canadianism, but it would seem to me those links should go, at least even if the text doesn't, to Dutch Canadian and Hungarian Canadian, rather than to Netherlands and Hungary. Adjusting the text to say "son of immigrant Canadian parents, his father being born in Holland, his mother in Hungary" also avoids the current wording's implication that they remain citizens of those countries, or indeed actually are there....Skookum1 (talk) 01:04, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- Just because the National Post's copy/grammar editors used clumsy wording with unfortunate implications doesn't mean Wikipedia should....in fact that sentence in the article is virtually something like copyvio, i.e. it's verbatim how the post put it, if only that phrase's worth....Skookum1 (talk) 01:11, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
