Comment: Nominating this on behalf of an IP editor, who will (as usual) provide the QPQ. ALT0 may seem mundane, but it's not usual for Arab-Israelis to compete for Israel at the Olympics. Neither is it well known that many Israeli citizens are Arabs.

My preference would be for this hook to run on 28 July, when the heats and semifinals in 100 m backstroke will be held. Problem is that we have three Olympic hooks for that date already. Given that he's quite good, there is a chance that he'll make the final on 29 July. Hence let's take the gamble and go for that day.

Dumelow has approved the draft article. Do you also want to do the review, given that you are now familiar with the content?

I like ALT0. In the event that the following is preferred, however, I offer it for consideration as ALT1:

Accuracy of "arab-israeli"

His mother is Jewish, so he is Jewish. So really, he does not belong to the group known as "Arab citizens of Israel". I will remove the wikilink. DMH223344 (talk) 17:19, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DMH223344 don't do that - I can see already from the titles of the cited sources that he is described in multiple of them as an Arab Israeli. I think adding Jewish as a qualifier would make sense, but most of all we should follow how reliable sources describe him (and potentially how he describes himself if he's clarified this). A specific meaning for whom? If the state bureaucracy, at least part of it clearly recognises him as Arab (he was offered exemption from military service on that basis). Society? Here we have examples of journalists who describe him as Arab.

I would say Arab citizens of Israel is a group with edge cases, and this seems like one of them. I don't offer a comprehensive definition of the term "Arab citizens of Israel", although reading the wiki article, I don't think it's self evident that he's not a member of this group as defined there - but per Wikipedia:NOTSOURCE, that's irrelevant. We should follow the sources in how we describe him, and I see sources that describe him as an Arab citizen of Israel. Samuelshraga (talk) 18:36, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is one english language source (JNS) cited here that describes him as an "Arab swimmer" and "Israeli Arab" and lastly as an "Arab citizen". The two Haaretz articles describe him (same author on both) as "Israeli Arab Jewish" in one article a "Palestinian citizen of Israel" in another article. I don't see how you're not proving the point. He's described in reliable sources as Arab, and as a citizen of Israel, and so we shouldn't occlude that he is either or both of these things.
