Updated info

[edit]

Found some updated info to include in the article when either I or somebody else has time:

Somno (talk) 02:10, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't use the refs listed above, but responded to your request on my talk page to look at the lead-in. I just went ahead and edited rather than initiate debate or consensus-seeking.

  • Largely re-wrote the first 3 paragraphs. Didn't include citations although strictly speaking there should be. I prefer to avoid citations in the lead-in paragraphs, providing that the lead-in draws from material elsewhere in the article that is already verified. I think for completeness, there could be some additional material added to the article related to the extra stuff I've put in to ther intro. Anyway - the NOPSA interim report is due within days or weeks which, if they've done their job ok will actually contain the first decent explanations of what went wrong and maybe why. I'm pretty sure the "issue" is not over yet, and that the economic and political consequences are yet to played out.
  • changed the location map. Quickly put together a new one based on an Aust PD template. In my haste, I have the Varanus arrow pointing to the Monte Bello islands which are a bit bigger than Varanus and about 20k's to the north. I'll fix this tomorrow.
  • Fixed one or two minor things in the body of the article. In my view, the quality of the reporting/journalism on this issue was woeful. Where I've noticed that a reporter has written something that defies the laws of physics or chemistry or has just messed up his/her research, I've fixed/removed it without affecting the connection between the WP text and the reference source.GlenDillon 09:13, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I used the refs above in an earlier update, so no worries there. I don't like to use citations in the lead either, unless it's something controversial. Everything in the lead should be mentioned within the article, where it's cited. I have only basic knowledge of the laws of physics and chemistry, so if something was incorrectly reported, I wouldn't have picked up on it - glad you've checked it. Regarding the new image: I like it! Could it be cropped to just WA? I wanted to do that with the first image, but couldn't for technical reasons. Somno (talk) 09:46, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
added a new image which focusses a bit better on the North-west location (though the base image is a little unfocussed! Had to crop and enlarge the original but tried to keep the pixellation to a minimum. Maybe the larger WA map is redundant now, I don't know. Delete it? Delete the new one even? I'll leave that to other editors GlenDillon 10:46, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Help! Everything from "References" down has disappeared following my edit. Not sure what I've done - eveything looks okay in the edit screen but nothing in preview mode nor the article itself. I'd rather not touch it again for the moment.GlenDillon 09:18, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like you managed to nut it out yourself. That trailing slash has caught all of us out at one time or another. Hesperian 11:28, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, got there in the end. Its a trap for young players! Forgot to cancel my call for help. Thanks for your fixes. Just added an image; a bit dated now (early July) but hopefully still useful in showing what the govt believed would happen. Would be interesting to compare with how the supply shortfall was really met but that would be crossing the O.R. boundary. Will have to wait for one of the many 'post-mortems' to provide a source for that. Not sure whether I've placed the image in the right spot - others may have a better feel for that than me. Also - unfortunately, for some reason I couldn't get excel to give me textures (like cross-hatching) to differentiate the segments. I'll endeavour to do a V2 in grayscale which is friendlier for colour-blind readers.GlenDillon 13:40, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
