GA Review: On Hold

[edit]

Article (edit | visual edit | history) · Article talk (edit | history) · Watch
I have reviewed this article according to the requirements of the GA criteria and have placed the article on hold until the following issues are addressed. As you address each issue, either strike through the statement/place a check mark next to the issue and state how you addressed it (if necessary). If you disagree with a particular issue, state your rationale for doing so after the issue in question so a compromise can be reached.

  • Is there a parameter in the infobox that allows for mentioning the total amount of damages? Also, does the Earthquake WikiProject allow for using the flag next to the country? I know the WP:FILMS style guidelines do not allow the flag as some readers may not recognize the flag and may be too small to see per WP:MOSFLAG.
    • checkY Added damage parameter to Template:Earthquake and used it here.
    • Hmm, I guess we have to make a style guide somehow. I say we should let the flag stay: it relates to the issue of communism presented in the article and is easily recognisable, even by colorblind people. The MOS doesn't disallow it, though if you think it should go I'll remove it. ~EDDY (talk/contribs/editor review)~ 13:39, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • In the infobox remove the wikilink for the full date.
  • In the Background section is it possible to mention any other recent earthquakes that had occurred prior to 1970 and after the 15th century. It just seems like there is a large gap there and all of the sudden a large one occurred in 1970.
  • "Effects of the rupture were felt through seven counties and over Template:Conver." Can you fix the red-link template issue?
  • In the Damages and casulty section, measurements switch from American measurement to the metric system. Choose one system of measurement and then make sure to add the opposing measurement in parenthesis afterward.
  • "In Hanoi, North Vietnam, almost 300 miles from the epicenter, victims left behind their homes as the rupture rumbled through that city." Reword to "...victims left their homes as the rupture rumbled through the city." Otherwise it sounds like they would have carried their homes with them.
  • "There was a maximum horizontal offset of 2.5 m (8 ft) and vertical offset of about 0.5 m (1.5 ft)." Try to include an explanatory sentence indicating what this means as the average reader may not be familiar with what the offsets mean.
  • "According to one foreign observer, the Chinese government sent Quotations from Chairman Mao Zedong books and badges in his honor as part of the relief effort." Who were the books and badges sent to? The victims or the rescuers?
  • "...until about 18 years after its occurrence;" Change the semicolon to a period.
  • "On 19 November 1988, speaking at..." In the intro and infobox, the date format uses the month and then day. Here it starts with the date and ends with the month. Choose one to remain uniform throughout the article.
  • "On 19 November 1988, speaking at a news conference for another earthquake that had recently occurred, Chen Zhangli of the State Seismology Bureau estimated the death toll of the 1970 quake to be 10,000." Consider rewording to "On 19 November 1988, Chen Zhangli of the State Seismology Bureau, speaking at a news conference for another earthquake that had recently occurred, estimated the death toll of the 1970 quake to be 10,000." This places the person near the front of the sentence, making it easier to read.
  • "A different estimate was released in 2000..." Who released this estimate?

Altogether, this brief article was informative on the topic and is well-sourced. I have left the article on hold for seven days for the issues to be addressed. These issues should be easy to fix and not take too long. If they are fixed in this time, I will pass the article. If not, the article may be failed and can be renominated at WP:GAN. If necessary to address the above issues, and progress is being made, an extension may be allowed. If you have any questions or when you are done, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 23:06, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GA passed

Good job with addressing the above issues. I made a few minor corrections, please look them over to make sure they are alright. I have passed this article according to the requirements of the GA criteria. Continue to improve the article, making sure that all new information is properly sourced and neutral.
