Henry Laufer (born January 3, 1990), known professionally as Shlohmo, is an American musician and producer from Los Angeles. He is best known for his experimental electronic production style, which blends left-field electronic production and hip hop and for co-founding the record label Wedidit Records.[1][2]
He is considered a pivotal figure in Los Angeles beat music scene of the mid-2000s, alongside beatmakers Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, Knxwledge, Tokimonsta, and Teebs.[3]
Laufer has released three studio albums, Bad Vibes (2011), Dark Red (2015), and The End (2019), as well as several EPs and collaborative mixtapes.
Early life
[edit]Laufer attended the progressive-minded Santa Monica private high school Crossroads, where he would meet WEDIDIT co-founder Nick Meledandri. They cut their teeth djing LA house parties in high school, producing beats for "for every fucking high school rapper around," and uploading their productions to Myspace and their personal blogspot. Following high school, Laufer briefly studied at California College of the Arts, studying drawing and painting, before dropping out after his 2010 Shlomoshun EP led to an album deal with LA-based independent label, Friends of Friends. [4]
Career
[edit]Shlohmo first began creating music in 2009 with his EP Shlo-Fi. It went nearly unnoticed, gaining less than one thousand views on YouTube. He would eventually receive attention in 2011 for his first full-length LP, Bad Vibes, which was featured on Pitchfork and Resident Advisor.[5][6]
Following Bad Vibes, Shlohmo continued releasing EPs, including Vacation (2012) and Laid Out (2013), remixing tracks such as Drake and The Weeknd's “Crew Love” as well as producing singles such as Banks's "Brain".
In 2014, Shlohmo released No More, a joint EP with singer Jeremih.[7]
In 2015, Shlohmo released his second LP, Dark Red.
In 2016, Shlohmo produced music for Post Malone, Tory Lanez, Lil Yachty, Corbin (Spooky Black), and Yung Lean.[8]
In 2017, Shlohmo executive produced Corbin's debut LP, Mourn. The LP was written and recorded exclusively at Wedidit's studio in Los Angeles and produced entirely by Shlohmo & D33J. Corbin and Shlohmo co-headlined a North American tour following the album's release.[9]
Shlohmo started a free mix series and visual collaboration titled For Tha Summer that showcases his experimental sample-based rap remixes, combined with spliced visuals.[10]
In 2018, Shlohmo produced two tracks on Joji's debut album, while preparing his own next solo album.
Shlohmo released his third LP The End in March 2019 through the Friends of Friends label.[11]
In 2020, Shlohmo released an EP titled Heaven Inc. through the Friends of Friends label.[12]
