Shirley Gibson (died October 16, 2023) was a public official and politician in Florida.[1] She was the first mayor of Miami Gardens, a majority African American city outside Miami.[2] She served as mayor of Miami Gardens from 2003 to 2012.[3]

She was born in Camilla, Georgia, and moved with her family to Key West as a child. The oldest of six children, she became a police officer.[4] She graduated from St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens with a B.A. in Criminal Justice and an M.A. in Pastoral Ministry. She worked as a police officer for several years,[5] before leading efforts for Miami Gardens to be incorporated as a city.[6] Miami Gardens was incorporated on May 13, 2003, after which Gibson served as mayor.[7] She hosted a radio talk show in Miami.[5]

She married Robert Wimberly Jr. and had a daughter.[4]
