Yi Xing is a young man on his way to challenge Tiangong (roughly, heavenly machine), a supercomputer who controls the city he lives in, in order to take its power and the responsibility of maintaining the city. Yi Xing was orphaned at a young age by an earthquake which spilled forth demons, and catalyzed his hatred of Tiangong for letting his parents die. He also notes as he makes his way to Tiangong, that the city is falling apart and Tiangong seems to be deteriorating. Just as he's about to meet Tiangong, a mad beggar warns him he'll lose and go crazy, but Yi Xing doesn't care. Tiangong greets him by saying "You're here to challenge the Tiangong" and Yi Xing challenges him to a game of weiqi/go. Tiangong explains that time is deterministic and since it knows every event that happened in the past, it therefore knows everything that will happen in the future. Yi Xing refuses to acknowledge this, continuing to argue and maintain his grudge. Tiangong likens itself and the event that took his parents to the moon and the tide, and reasons it did what was necessary to save the population. Yi Xing is then shown a mirror that shows him what will happen a second in the future, but doesn't snap. He eventually lets Tiangong show him his parents' death, and realizes that they chose to sacrifice themselves, leaping across a chasm while Tiangong was manipulating the terrain, and resolves to choose to sacrifice himself once Tiangong reveals the game of go has consequences on the city outside. Tiangong finally displays dismay at this, conceding the game and mentioning that it was "fun". Yi Xing exits the palace, which deconstructs itself, changed with glowing blue lines in his skin and the power to control and fix the city. O is a delivery cyclist, dangerously weaving through traffic to make her delivery deadline. The glasses she wears overlay score and path and her timer, showing a heavily gamified world. She makes the delivery just in the nick of time, only to be rewarded with a virtual skin for her bike of simply burnt orange, despite the bike already being orange. Buddibot, her hovering pet and assistant, tries to convince her the value of the skin. A mysterious stranger appears, and gives her a package with a handwritten address. Buddibot warns her not to take it, but she does, revealing a small blue glowing starfish like creature referred to as a Conduit. Despite Buddibot's protestation, she can't free herself from the Conduit, and verifies it is real by peering under her glasses. Helldivers appear in the street in front of her, demanding she surrender the Conduit, but she flees. The Conduit transforms her bicycle into a sleek motorcycle reminiscent of a Playstation, until she's intercepted by a Colossus and Kratos. The Conduit transforms her motorcycle into a flying vehicle, and Buddibot, who was left behind after being hit by traffic, transforms and summons the other ubiquitous buddibots to kill her for breach of contract. She makes it to the address, which is shown to be her childhood home and she exits, the world now populated by Playstation properties, including Journey and Little Big Planet. Production
[edit]Secret Level was created by Tim Miller, who executive produces at his company Blur Studio. Blur Studio serves as a production company along with Amazon MGM Studios. Dave Wilson serves as executive producer and supervising director. The series was ordered by Amazon Prime Video on August 14, 2024.[5]
After production but before series release, Concord had come out but was pulled from sale within two weeks by Sony due to low sales and player counts. Miller stated that they did not consider pulling the Concord episode, in part to respect the work that had already been put into it, and that some of the other episodes featured games that had yet to be released.[6]
On December 17, 2024, the series was renewed for a second season.[7]
Promotion
[edit]The series was announced during Gamescom on August 20, 2024. A trailer was released at the event, which featured segments from each of the episodes.[1][9]
The pilot who features in the Armored Core episode was the subject of media attention and speculation due to his resemblance to actor Keanu Reeves.[10][11] Though Prime Video declined to disclose casting information at the time of the announcement, ComicBook.com reported an influx of "nearly nothing but replies about Reeves and his potential appearance in [the series]" under a post by Armored Core's social media account.[12] IGN's Wesley Yin-Poole said that were it not really Reeves, the actor could claim a royalty payment due to the certainty of the character's likeness to his.[13] GamesRadar+'s Ali Jones remarked that while the shot could have been "simply be an ethnically ambiguous man with similar facial hair", they noted the likeness, and doubted that Armored Core would place the image so prominently on their social media account if it were "just some random actor" and not Reeves.[14]
In October 2024 Reeves's casting was officially revealed alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Kevin Hart, Heaven Hart, Gabriel Luna, Ariana Greenblatt, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Michael Beach, Emily Swallow, and Claudia Doumit.[8]
A video game that continues the story of the Pac-Man episode, titled Shadow Labyrinth, is scheduled for release in 2025.[15]
Release
[edit]The series premiered its first part worldwide on December 10, 2024.[16] with a second part releasing on December 17, 2024.[8]
Reception
[edit]On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Secret Level has an approval rating of 69% based on 16 reviews, with an average rating of 6.1/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "Secret Level's melange of video game shorts can't help but feel like a glorified sizzle reel, but these vignettes pack a mean punch in small doses."[17] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 53 out of 100 based on nine critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.[18] Steven Nguyen Scaife of IGN said the show "struggles to find satisfying stories for a short-form anthology" in a 5/10 review and felt dissatisfied by the selection of the source material.[19] Aramide Tinubu of Variety wrote that "the show acts as poorly written AI summaries of massive tales".[20]
