Ram Kalyan Sharma (8 January 1912 — 11 August 1947) was an Indian revolutionary who played a role in India's independence movement against British colonial rule.[1] He was actively involved in revolutionary activities at a young age and he was inspired by Bhagat Singh and Chandra Shekhar Azad.[2][3]

Death and Legacy

[edit]

On August 11, 1947, Ram Kalyan had left home for Hindoli Court in the morning. When he reached Nahar ka Chohatta in Bundi after leaving his daughters at school, he got a message that there was no one to lead the procession of Motor Trade Association. So, he immediately took a decision and set out to lead the procession on foot.[3] Sharma led the procession carrying the country's flag where his path was also blocked by the police.[3]

After the police stopped the procession, due to aerial firing on the people involved in the procession and a stampede, people climbed the trees and Sharma remained there along with some people carrying the flag and sat on the ground carrying the tricolor flag. The British warned him to stop the procession, leave the flag, appeal to his family and asked him to leave. However, he refused.[1]

At last, the police opened fire on him, and he fell on the ground holding the tricolor flag. He was taken to the hospital. But he could not be saved and died on 11 August 1947, 4 days before India's independence from the United Kingdom.[1][5]

A memorial and some streets have been named after Sharma to honour him.[6][7]
