• 1839 – The ship Amistad (pictured) is captured off Long Island.
• 1929 – For the first time, Canadian National Railway uses diesel locomotives to power a passenger train, with unit number 9000 on the second section of the International Limited between Montreal and Toronto.
• 1994 – The Dominion Atlantic Railway operates its last train, just a month short of the railroad's 100th anniversary.
