[edit]- 1850 – The first train operates on the Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, a predecessor of the Milwaukee Road.[1]
- 1852 – The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway line between Erie, Pennsylvania, and Cleveland, Ohio, opens.
- 1855 – The first train to operate in Iowa on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad departs Davenport for Muscatine with six crowded passenger cars.[2]
- 1886 – The San Bernardino and Los Angeles Railway is incorporated as a Santa Fe Railroad subsidiary to build a rail connection between its namesake cities in California.[3]
20th century
[edit]- 1911 – Western Maryland Railway breaks ground for the station in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania.[4]
- 1918 – The Canadian government takes over control of the Canadian Northern Railway, appoints a new board of directors and places the management of the Canadian Government Railways under the new board's control.[5]
- 1920 – Work begins on the State Railway of Thailand to convert all 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) track to meter gauge.[6]
- 1934 – Shin-Kotoni Station on what is now JR Hokkaido's Sasshō Line in Kita-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, is opened.[7]
- 1961 – Union Pacific 844 makes its first excursion run following retirement from regular revenue service on the Union Pacific Railroad.[1]
- 1998 – The Okanagan Valley Railway begins operations on the former Canadian Pacific Railway branch between Sicamous and Kelowna, British Columbia.[5]
