The Ottoman occupation of Southern Iranian lands (1821) was a battle during the Ottoman–Persian War (1821–1823).
Ottoman invasion of Qajar lands
[edit]Abbas Mirza made representations, but his agent was arrested and then ordered to invade the Turkish dominions. The Ottomans, with their army weak at the front, occupied all the regions adjacent to Azerbaijan, including Kurdistan. Further south, the Pasha of Baghdad attempted to invade Iran. The Ottomans had a large army of 50,000 men there.[5][3][4]
Qajar counterattack
[edit]When Prince Mohammad Ali Mirza (the ruler of the western provinces of Iran and son of Fath Ali Shah Qajar) heard the news of the Ottoman army's movement, he left Kermanshah with about fifteen thousand warriors and rushed towards the border.[2] After the Ottoman invasion of these territories, Muhammad Ali Mirza Dovlatshah, the eldest son of Fatali Shah Qajar, the governor of Kermanshah, defeated the Ottomans and made a strong advance towards Baghdad.[1] The attack was first carried out along the Shirvan River from Shahrizor, supported by the Kurds and Lurs, who defeated the Ottoman resistance and forced them to retreat towards Kirkuk. Muhammad Ali Mirza conquered Sulaymaniyah and captured Samarra, and then besieged Baghdad. Davud Pasha sent an envoy to meet Muhammad Ali Mirza Dovlatshah. However, cholera broke out in the Qajar army, and Dovlatshah himself fell victim to the disease.[3]
