Notes
[edit]- ^ The notation Old Style or (OS) is sometimes used to indicate a date in the Julian Calendar (which is used by churches on the "Old Calendar").
The notation New Style or (NS), indicates a date in the Revised Julian calendar (which is used by churches on the "New Calendar"). - ^ Name days celebrated today include:
- Cyprian, Kiprianos (Κυπριανός);
- Justine, Ioustini (Ἰουστίνη).
- ^ "At Constantinople, St. Theophilus, a monk, who was most cruelly scourged by Leo the Isaurian, for the defence of holy images, was driven into exile, and went gloriously to heaven."[10]
- ^ "Also, the holy martyr Gerinus, brother of the blessed Leodegarius, who was overwhelmed with stones in the same city."[10]
- ^ Nephew of the Bishop of Poitiers in France, in 653 he became Abbot of St Maxentius. In 659 he became Bishop of Autun. His connection with the court brought on him the fury of the tyrant Ebroin who had the saint imprisoned, blinded and finally murdered.
- ^ "In the vicinity of Arras, the martyrdom of blessed Leodegarius, bishop of Autun. After being subjected to various insults and torments for the truth, he was put to death by Ebroin, chief minister of Theodoric."[10]
- ^ The glorious great-martyr and brave athlete of the Lord Theodore Gavras or Theodore Gabras (Greek: Ὁ Ἅγιος Θεόδωρος ὁ Μεγαλομάρτυρας ὁ Γαβρᾶς, †1098), was a Byzanatine general who recaptured Trebizond from the Danishmend Turks in 1075 AD, and ruled it as the center of the Byzantine theme of Chaldia as a virtually autonomous state from 1081–1098. He fought with success against the Danishmend Turks and the Georgians, and later became a heroic figure in both Pontic Greek and Turkoman poetry.[18] He was tortured and martyred in the region of Theodosiopolis (Erzurum) by the Danishmend Turks for refusing to convert to Islam, under one of the generals of Emir Danishmend Gazi, named Amir Ali (Amiralis, Amyrali).
