There are many sites in English that claim it is the monkey but this seems to trace back to wikipedia. This is evidenced by this column from Nikkie https://xtech.nikkei.com/it/pc/article/NPC/20061101/252450/. Also, 1. The equivalent wikipedia article in Japan does not have a national animal. 2. My father in law (Japanese) a journalist from Yomiuri new claims there is no national animal. 3. Many discussions in Japanese mention there is no 日本の国の動物。 undo
