My Green Doctor is an online practice management and education program launched by the Florida Medical Association (FMA) in 2010. It provides healthcare professionals with tools and resources to integrate environmental sustainability into their practices.[1][2]
Overview
[edit]In 2001, the FMA established the Environment & Health Section to examine environmental impacts on public health.[3] The My Green Doctor program was launched on Earth Day in 2010 by Todd L. Sack, then chair of the section.[4][5]
The program provides guidance on topics including energy conservation, waste management, chemical safety, renewable energy, and sustainable purchasing.[6] It emphasizes practical steps for integrating sustainability into healthcare operations.[7][8]
It is operated as a non-profit by the My Green Doctor Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization established in 2021, and is headquartered in Jacksonville Beach, Florida.[9]
In December 2021, My Green Doctor launched the "Your Healthy Home" brochure series, providing environmental health information to patients and families.[10] As of January 2022, it is offered as a free resource by nineteen health professional societies.[11]
Media Recognition
[edit]The program has been covered by several publications and medical organizations. The American Medical Association (AMA) featured My Green Doctor in multiple articles, including a 2016 report on physicians promoting environmental sustainability[12] and a 2017 piece on cost savings through sustainability practices.[13]
In 2020, Medscape published an article on cost-saving benefits of sustainability in medical practices.[14] The following year, The Guardian cited My Green Doctor in an article discussing environmental justice.[15]
In 2022 and 2023, the AMA continued coverage with articles on climate action in healthcare.[16][17]
Additional recognition includes a 2024 feature in Chicago Medicine on climate change and healthcare.[18] My Green Doctor has also been mentioned in healthcare sustainability conferences and podcasts.[19][20][21]
