Wikipedia has five kinds of top-of-page messages that can be used to convey information or announcements to readers and editors.

The "Sitenotice", found at MediaWiki:Sitenotice, is displayed at the top of all pages for all logged-in users, and for anonymous users if the following message is empty.
MediaWiki:Anonnotice can be used to display information only to anonymous/IP users, not logged-in users. Alternatively, by 'blanking' the anonnotice and replacing it with nothing (not even a space or empty paragraph!), then the sitenotice can be used as a "logged-in users only" notice to display information only to editors. When "Anonnotice" contains nothing, no notice is shown to anonymous users. When it contains "-" it disables the message in favour of Sitenotice. If it contains anything else, it will be rendered to anonymous users instead of the Sitenotice (including a "hide" button).
MediaWiki:Watchlist-messages is displayed at the top of Special:Watchlist for all users who use this feature.
The CentralNotice, found at meta:Special:CentralNotice, is an extension which can display banners at the top of a select group of Wikimedia sites simultaneously.
Geonotice, at Wikipedia:Geonotice, allows location-specific notices – and is a candidate for integration into MediaWiki.

This page was created on January 16, 2005 (one day after Wikipedia Day). It is the equivalent of MediaWiki:Sitenotice except that it shows up only for unregistered (anonymous) users. According to the developers, by either deleting this page or setting it to -, MediaWiki software will fall back to the SiteNotice. Flcelloguy (A note?) 03:45, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not done. This clashes with {{coor title dms}}, and fails on very large font sizes (it overlaps the horizontal line underneath the page's title). I'm also not convinced it would work on the Main Page (although the current version doesn't work properly there either), but it's hard to test. If you want to submit a revised version, please set your browser's font size to maximum as one of the tests you do when sandboxing; positions hard-coded in pixels normally fail under such conditions. --ais523 11:37, 20 April 2007 (U T C)

Wikileaks

There is a propsal at MediaWiki talk:Sitenotice#Wikileaks that would probably be more appropriate here. Rd232 suggested today that per Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Main_page_disclaimer and Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2010-12-06/WikiLeaks:

"Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation are not associated with the whistleblowing site Wikileaks, despite a similarity in names"

be displayed. A few editors suggested that since editors would probably be aware already, the notice be restricted to anons and readers only. bahamut0013^words _deeds 17:40, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We do not really need it, just another banner which will only add confusion to readers. They know that that 'pedia is not related 'leaks, should be used for public announcements, not disclaimer. e^xtra999 (talk) 15:45, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
