List of first Olympic medalists by National Olympic Committee
Appearance
An Olympic medal is awarded to successful competitors at one of the Olympic Games. There are three classes of medal to be won: gold, silver, and bronze, awarded to first, second, and third place, respectively.[1] Athletes competing at the Olympics do so representing National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and cannot enter the Olympic Games as individual competitors or without the authority of an NOC.[2][3] NOCs must be recognized by the International Olympic Committee, the sole authority capable of doing so, in order to compete.[4]

[edit]- ^ Two Canadian athletes participated and medaled at the 1900 Summer Olympics, but they did not do so as part of the national team.
- ^ Australia and New Zealand competed as a united team called Australasia for the 1908 and 1912 Summer Games.[26]
- ^ An athlete from Luxembourg competed as a member of the French team, though his nationality is disputed.
- ^ a b From 1956 to 1964, athletes from East Germany and West Germany competed together as the United Team of Germany.[61]
- ^ a b Despite previously competing at the Olympics since 1900, Russia previously competed as the Russian Empire and Soviet Union, and their medal totals are treated entirely separately.
- ^ a b On February 19, 2021, the IOC announced that Russian athletes would compete at the 2020 Summer Olympics (which was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Russia) and 2022 Winter Olympics under the acronym "ROC", which was the IOC designation of Russian athletes permitted to participate. The designation was instigated following the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee after the Russian doping scandal. The name of the committee itself in full could not be used to refer to the delegation.[143]
- ^ The rules at the time allowed teams to participate with either four or five man teams in the Bobsleigh event at the 1924 Winter Games.[151]
- ^ John Kah, who was a reserve member of the team, did not receive a medal.[162]
