Kevin Bourne is a Barbadian-Canadian journalist, entrepreneur, and producer. He has appeared nationally as a correspondent on CBC News Network[1] and as a guest host on CBC Music 94.1 FM. He has also appeared locally on CTV, CBC, CBC Radio, CityNews, and Newstalk 1010, and in the United States on Fox Soul, commenting on Black entertainment and culture, as well as politics.
Biography
[edit]Bourne was born in Toronto to parents who had immigrated from Barbados in the 1970s.[2]
Prior to working in the entertainment industry, he graduated from the Glendon campus of York University with a BA in Political Science and a Bilingual Certificate in Public Administration & Public Policy.[3] He then moved to Ottawa to work on Parliament Hill, both in the Senate and House of Commons, as a political staffer in communications and policy. In August 2013, Bourne founded the Black digital media platform SHIFTER and its sister company SHIFTER Agency. He interviewed entertainers such as Kevin Hart, Tyrese Gibson, Ziggy Marley, Ava DuVernay, Dascha Polanco, Lilly Singh, and Howie Mandel.
While living in Ottawa, he was named to Ottawa Life Magazine's Best of Ottawa: Activists & Changemakers list for 2020[4] and 2021, a TEDx speaker,[5] and a part-time TV Broadcasting professor at Algonquin College. Under the radio name "KB The Boss", he was also the co-producer and co-host of the daily hip-hop morning radio show, The Morning Shift, on CHUO 89.1FM alongside Vladimir Jean-Gilles, and a columnist for both the Ottawa Citizen[6] and Ottawa Business Journal.[7] After relocating to Toronto with his family, he co-curated the "83 Til Infinity" immersive hip-hop exhibit at the Ottawa Art Gallery celebrating 30 years of hip-hop in the Ottawa-Gatineau region, alongside author and curator, Rachelle Dickenson.[8]
His years as an entertainment journalist led to him being named a voting member of the Golden Globe Awards and a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer-Approved critic.[9][10]
In 2022, Bourne co-founded SHIFTER Entertainment, alongside his wife and business partner, Koliah. Through this project he has produced a number of projects, including narrative short films, two digital series with CBC,[11][12] and the Bell Fibe TV1 unscripted reality series “A Date In The Life”,[13] serving as showrunner, writer and co-director.
