Jeanette Zacarías Zapata (October 6, 2002 – September 2, 2021) was a Mexican professional boxer in the welterweight division. She passed away at the age of 18 after being injured in a bout in Montreal, Canada.[1]

Death

[edit]

On August 28, 2021, Zacarías Zapata faced Marie Pier Houle in an eight-round bout at the GVM Gala International event at IGA Stadium in Montreal. During the fourth round, Zapata was knocked down after taking a series of punches, including a left uppercut and a right hook.[2] After the final blow, she appeared dazed and was unable to return to her corner. She collapsed and began convulsing, prompting medical staff to rush her to the hospital.[3]

Zapata was placed in a medically induced coma, but tragically passed away on September 2, 2021, five days later, from the injuries sustained during the fight.[4]
