James Mark Beckman (born October 19, 1962) is an American priest of the Catholic Church who serves as the fourth bishop for the Diocese of Knoxville.

On July 13, 1990, Beckman was ordained to the priesthood.

Episcopal career

Pope Francis appointed Beckman as the fourth bishop for the Diocese of Knoxville on May 7, 2024.[1][2][3] On July 26, 2024, Beckman was consecrated as a bishop.

Early Life

James Mark Beckman was born on October 19, 1962 into a large Catholic family deeply rooted in Lawrenceburg, TN, a small town in Middle Tennessee, within the Diocese of Nashville, to parents Jimmy and Louis Beckman. Beckman being the oldest of six children.[4] Their household was described as a bustling and joyous environment, characterized by close familial bonds, religious devotion, and an active community presence.

Growing up, James Mark Beckman and his siblings were immersed in their faith and community life. The Beckman children attended Catholic school, participated in church activities, and engaged in various outdoor pursuits. The family's home was often the site of gatherings and celebrations, fostering a sense of togetherness that persisted throughout their lives.

During his high school years, Beckman began discerning his religious vocation. Encouraged by Father John Kirk, a priest at Sacred Heart Church in Lawrenceburg, he made the decision to enter the seminary upon graduating. His mother emphasized the family's unwavering commitment to Catholicism, noting that attending Mass was always a priority.
