Grupo Frontera is a Mexican-American regional Mexican band from Edinburg, Texas. The band consists of Adelaido "Payo" Solís III (vocals, bajo quinto), Juan Javier Cantú (vocals, accordion), Julian Peña Jr. (congas), Alberto "Beto" Acosta (bajo quinto), Carlos Guerrero (drums), and Brian Ortega (bass guitar).
Career
[edit]Grupo Frontera was formed in early 2022, originally performing at weddings and parties. This led them to release their debut EP in March of that year titled, En Vivo, Vol. 1. Their release includes covers of songs such as Vicente Fernández's "Estos Celos" and Diego Verdaguer's "La Ladrona".[3] A month later, they released their second EP, containing a cover of Morat's "No Se Va" which eventually went viral on TikTok and would chart at the end of the year.[1] In December 2022, a second collaboration with Fuerza Regida, after "911 (En Vivo)", titled "Bebé Dame" reached number one on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs charts and peaked at number 25 on Billboard Hot 100, becoming their first top 40 hit.[4] Carlos Zamora, Grupo Frontera's original bassist, left in late 2022 and was replaced by Brian Ortega.[5]
By May 2023, the band achieved its first top five hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with the Bad Bunny collaboration "Un x100to". In response to this, Grupo Frontera announced a 23-date tour to begin in mid-2023. An article by Billboard considered the band's success integral in the breakthrough of the regional Mexican genre.[6] The band achieved fame through their norteño cumbias, but upon the release of their full-length debut album in August 2023, El Comienzo, they proved they could delve into other regional Mexican styles, as well as outside the genre.
The band released their second album, Jugando a Que No Pasa Nada on May 10, 2024. The album features songs incorporating country, R&B, electronic, and bachata genres. Guest appearances on the album include Christian Nodal, Maluma, Morat, and Nicki Nicole.[7][8]
Political controversy and backlash
[edit]In early 2025, a video went viral on social media, wherein Adelaido "Payo" Solís' grandmother, alias "La Abuela Frontera", dances Village People's "Y.M.C.A" with other relatives, a song used by the American politician Donald Trump for his 2024 presidencial campaign.[9][10][11][12] After considering it as an endorsement to Trump, Mexican users related it directly as a political support from the band.[13] As a result and after the disappearance of the "La Abuela Frontera" 's account, they received massive followers losses, hate comments and accusations of being Latinos for Trump, considering the alleged endorsement as a "betrayal of the Mexicans" due to Trump's mass deportation of immigrants during his current presidency.[10][11][12][13] Therefore, fans called for a digital cancel to the band, rejecting their presence in Mexico and refraining from consuming any content related to them, including songs, videos and live performances.[13][14][15] In addition, a video of a massive booing at one of their recent concerts went viral the next days.[16] Furthermore, some users noticed they deleted a TikTok video dancing the same song as Solís' grandmother, as well as videos of interviews to some of the members, wherein they encourage to vote for the politician, considering them as an explicit evidence of an endorsement.[11][14]
After a long time without any pronunciation on the subject and publishing a video of a US crowd singing "Bebé Dame", described by media as an indirect response,[A] on February 7, the band published a statement through Instagram stories, arguing "[they] do not have affiliation or alliance with any political party that is against inmigrants and the Latino community".[9] In addition, they clarified they are immigrants and come from the frontier, as well as their support to Mexicans and "relatives and friends' opinions do not represent [the band]".[9] Furthermore, in an interview by EXA FM, the group highlighted the delivery of toys to immigrant children and their pride in Mexican culture.[18][19] On February 11, a petition at the American website Change.org was published by alias "Espíritu" to cancel the Grupo Frontera's participation at the 2025 edition of the Chicago Latin music festival Sueños.[14] The petition accumulated over 9,800 signatures the next day.[14] Sueños co-founder Christopher Den Uijl affirmed on Instagram the festival's support to the Latino community and stated none of the co-founders are supporters of the president, without mentioning anything related to the group.[14]
Besides fans backlash, the Pepe Aguilar's son, Emiliano Aguilar, reacted through a series of Instagram stories in favor of the cancellation, saying, "Fuck [Grupo Frontera]. Mexico must be respected".[20] In a positive view, other fans reacted against the massive cancellation and supporting the band's freedom of speech, arguing "the cancel culture should not spread to those with different political opinions", according to Infobae's Víctor Cisneros.[21] Periódico ABC's Juan Garza praised the way the band managed the controversy and spoke against the backlash, condemning the information spread on the networks as "erroneous".[22] On the other hand, both fans and some online newspapers categorized the concert booing as fake.[B] In addition, the February 7 statement polarized fans' opinions, some applauding it and others arguing it is not authentic and was only an attempt to maintain their reputation;[14][24] however, a representative of the group confirmed its autenticity.[14] Around the TikTok dance video, "Espíritu" denied any explicit reference of an endorsement there, but he said it was implicit, while Chicago Sun-Times's staff opined "[Donald Trump] and [Grupo Frontera] [...] may simply have similar music tastes".[14] Marca's staff linked the controversy with Banda MS and Fuerza Regida's situation, emphasizing the personal opinions of some members of the respective bands.[15] Many fans compared it with the American band Yahritza y su Esencia's 2023 backlash, when they visited Mexico and the vocalist Yahritza Martinez confessed controversial preferences despising the country and Mexican cuisine, therefore they stopped performing there.[11][25][26]
