There have been many flags to represent Aceh and the Acehnese people and culture, both in the past and current usage, while the province of Aceh officially uses a plain colour field with the state coat of arms in the middle like the other Indonesian provinces as per law,[1] a big portion of Acehnese society often uses the Bintang Buleuën or the Alam Peudeuëng to represent Aceh and its people.[2][3]

The topic has been a controversial one due to the association of a separate flag for Aceh to the Free Aceh Movement which seeks to declare Aceh independent from Indonesia, which would be against the law.[1]

Alam Acéh

[edit]

Alam Acéh (Jawoë: علم اچيه pronounced [alam atʃɛh]), or the Aceh Flag, is the official flag used by the province of Aceh. It consists of a green background with the provincial coat of arms in the middle.

Bintang Buleuën

[edit]

Alam Bintang Buleuën (Jawoë: علم بينتڠ بولن pronounced [alam bintaŋ bulɯən]), or the Moon Star flag, is the flag of the Free Aceh Movement. It consists of a white crescent moon and a star in the centre, between six horizontal striples, alternating between two thin stripes of white and one thick stripe of black, on a red field.

The usage and possession of the Moon Star flag has been subjected to controversy in Aceh and the Indonesian government due to its separatist background.

In 2013, the Moon Star flag alongside the coat of arms was stated in law by the provincial Acehnese government to not be a symbol of separatism, and instead a cultural and uniting symbol of Aceh, removing it of its past separatism relation.[4][5] This was later rejected on May 12, 2016, through the Minister of Home Affairs Decree 188.34-4791 of 2016, as they deem the Qanun to be in violation of Regulation of Government Number 77 of 2007.[6] Iskandar Usman Al-Farlaky, a member of the Aceh House of Representatives, argues that the decree is invalid, he stated that according to Article 145 of the Constitution Number 32 of 2004, a regional law can be rejected by the president for no longer than 60 days,[7] and if nothing is said about the regional law, then it is official.[6]

Alam Peudeuëng

[edit]

Alam Peudeuëng (Jawoë: علم ڤدڠ pronounced [alam pɯdɯəŋ]), or the Sword Standard, is the flag of the Aceh Sultanate. It consists of a white crescent moon and a star in the centre above a white sword pointing to the right on a red field.[8]

The Sword Standard has been a strong alternative to the Moon Star flag. A sizable portion of Acehnese society favors this flag as the flag of Aceh, as they deem it to represent Aceh culture and history better.[9]
