Fazir Shikhbabaevich Dzhaferov[a][2][3] (also known under the pseudonym Fazir Mualim)[4] (Russian: Фазир Шихбабаевич Джаферов; born 1970, Tsnal) is a Russian Dagestani poet, translator and theatre critic. Member of the Union of Writers of Russia.[5] Founder of the literary association "Verba".[6]

Biography

[edit]

He was born in the village of Tsnal, Khiva District, Dagestan ASSR to a family of farmers.[4] His mother was a collective farmer and carpet weaver, and his father was a worker.[7] He learned Russian only at the age of 12.[4]

He studied at the Dagestan State University, Faculty of Foreign Languages. Without completing his studies there, he transferred to study at the Moscow Literary Institute (Faculty of Poetry).

He published his works in the newspaper "Literary Russia", magazines "Don", "Nana", "Vainakh", "Daria". In 2010, his book of poems "And So On" was published.

Since 2019 English teacher at Tsnal Secondary School.[2] Collects folklore in the Lezgin language.[8]

Dzhaferov's creative pseudonym "Mualim" means "teacher" in Lezgin.[4]

Fazir Dzhaferov speaks out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.[9]

Criticism

[edit]

Boris Kutenkov noted: “Fazir Mualim, by his own admission, knows and loves his native Lezgin language, but he began speaking Russian by the age of 12. This is not accidental; the author represents a cross-section of poetics, the features of which are conditioned by linguistic bilingualism. Even with a cursory reading of both the presented selection and Fazir’s books, the rhyming skill (characteristic of not all authors of Russian nationality) and rhythmic variability are striking”.[10][11] Literary critic Yana-Maria Kurmangalina wrote that Fazir Dzhaferov has his own style, his own special intonation: “His poems combine the spirit of national self-identity, and the Russian poetic tradition, and a deep spiritual experience of knowing the world, God, and one’s role on a long journey”.[12] Maxim Atyakshev (Nezavisimaya Gazeta) evaluates Fazir Mualim as a Sufi poet, the author of deep and orientally vivid mystical poems.[13]
