Patton Oswalt

[edit]

Should Patton Oswalt's remarks be included here? His words came about a week after San Diego Comic-Con, and I remember following the convention there were a bunch of fake tweets going around from those "Marvel Updates" accounts with thousands of likes and retweets which said that Eternals 2 was announced at the panel. His exact words were "They have announced there's going to be an Eternals sequel", echoing the wording of the fake tweets, and he said this even though there was no such announcement from Marvel whatsoever. I think it's pretty obvious at this point that he must have seen one of these tweets and believed it was real. Even Kumail Nanjiani recently said that Oswalt must have believed a fake article.

Something similar happened with Rosario Dawson four days after Oswalt's words. She was at a panel where she said "I found out yesterday that The Punisher was happening again," leading to several articles headlined "Rosario Dawson Announces Punisher's Return", a day later she tweeted "I can’t be trusted…! Getting intel from fans during signings is iffy apparently. My bad. I get excited. Confirmation is key when you’re told what you want to hear…". I think this is similar to what happened with Oswalt, except unfortunately he didn't later correct himself. Aldwiki1 (talk) 12:30, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

We don't know where Oswalt got that idea from, and we do have a co-star (Nanjiani) casting doubt on his claims. It's likely Oswalt misheard things, but we can't be sure in this case, so it should remain for now. Stating Zhao is involved I think could be iffy, but I'd be fine with keeping it mentioned but not included as fact in the infobox and lead. Trailblazer101 (talk) 16:19, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed that having Nanjiani's words in there seems like a good enough counter. However I just noticed that his remarks aren't mentioned in the Future section of Eternals (film) and in Draft:Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Seven I think they should be included there just as they were here. Would you agree? Aldwiki1 (talk) 22:48, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That should be at the Eternals page, so I have now added it there. As for at the Phase 7 draft, the contents there are still very early on so there is leeway in what can be included, given we no longer mention it in the mainspace as concretely confirmed. I'll adjust the wording to say Oswalt "stated", not "revealed", given the clear ambiguity of it. There's not point to mention every bit of teasing or statements on it there as the phase articles are brief overviews of the contents. When a sequel is officially revealed to be in development, I'm sure plenty will have forgotten about Oswalt's statements or they will be more obsolete to an announcement from the trades. Keep this draft?

[edit]

Do we need to be keeping this draft in development, or would it be better suited, for the time being, to ensure relevant info is at Eternals (film)#Future and redirect this name there until some more promising development comes out? - Favre1fan93 (talk) 16:07, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think that makes sense, the most promising information we got ended up being a mistake so we don't really have anything concrete to go on. - adamstom97 (talk) 19:57, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I second that. If anything does eventuate, we can always resurrect this. Trailblazer101 (talk) 21:37, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
