Draft:Zakup

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A zakup was a semifree bondsman in Kyivan Rus and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Zakupy were effectively slaves, although technically they were free debtors. A person became zakupy by offering his/her personal freedom as collateral for a loan (kupa). A zakup could become free again by repaying his debt, but failure to fulfill their obligation could reduce the zakup to the status of a slave (kholop).

A landlord could administer corporal punishment to a zakup, but they could not be sold or killed.[1]
