The Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust (WHCT) provides financial support for critical repairs and certain improvements to churches and chapels in Wiltshire, England, without regard to their denomination.
Wiltshire has an exceptional array of places of worship.[1]. WHCT encourages interest in Wiltshire churches and chapels and its membership, principally The Friends of Wiltshire Churches, organises lectures and church tours.
The Trust was established in 1953. An inaugural Trust service was held in Salisbury Cathedral on 1st June 1954 and the Trust Deed was signed on 11th November 1954. The Trust celebrated its 70th anniversary in an Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service in Malmesbury Abbey on 16th July 2024.
The Trust is a registered not-for-profit UK charity[2]. Its funding of grants to Wiltshire churches and chapels is derived from the annual Wiltshire Ride and Stride event, the contributions of The Friends of Wiltshire Churches and individual donations.
Since 1954, the Trust has purposefully contributed over £1.7M in grants to places of worship in Wiltshire[3]
