Plot
[edit]Transgender teen Silas Bell is a Speaker, a type of medium known for having violet eyes and the ability to speak to the dead. However, according to an 1841 act, woman are not permitted to be licensed Speakers. After a failed attempt to disguise himself as a Speaker initiate, he lands in an all-girls academy, part finishing school and part sanitorium, meant to train rebellious teenagers into being more ideal members of society. Silas learns of the frequent disappearance of other students, and begins investigating the mystery.

Critical Review and Reception
[edit]The Spirit Bares Its Teeth was listed as one of The Observer's Best New Books of 2023, with the newspaper noting, "White brilliantly spins a novel that deftly explores gender roles and queerness in a strict, laced-up society."[2] Paste Magazine also listed it as one of their Best YA Books of 2023,[3] marking the second time one of White's novels would make the list. The Southern Bookseller Review described The Spirit Bares Its Teeth as a necessary addition to LGBTQ and horror literature.[4] It was featured as a 2024 Stonewall Book Award Honoree.[5]
