The Animal Warfare Act is a horror metal band, originally from Whitehorse, Yukon, and now based in Toronto.
The band was started in 2018 as a solo project, by then-19-year-old vocalist and guitarist Manus ‘Hopskotch’ Hopkins. Hopskotch had been a somewhat prominent member of the Yukon’s music scene for several years as part of the teenage hardcore group Warrmauth. Because of his connections in the community, The Animal Warfare Act started to be offered shows before it was even a real band.
After recruiting younger brother Cormac ‘Corndog’ Hopkins as the band's drummer, the two brought The Animal Warfare Act from a hobby project into a legitimate band, eventually recording and releasing their debut album The Doomsday Tapes in 2020, following it up with another, titled Please Don’t Feed the Animals in 2022.
In the fall of 2021, the brothers packed up a van and moved to Toronto, where they began gigging in the local circuit and surrounding areas. In 2023, The Animal Warfare Act signed with North Gold Entertainment and released a new single, “Another Prayer,” the first song off their upcoming 2024 EP.
The Animal Warfare Act has become known in southern Ontario for over-the-top theatrical live performances and music that’s as catchy as it is heavy. Already garnering a dedicated cult following in their now-home city, there’s only one direction The Animal Warfare Act can go from here: up.
