Stevie Stiletto and the Switchblades
Stevie Stiletto and the Switchblades was an American punk rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1982. Founded by vocalist Ray McKelvey, also known as *Stevie Stiletto*, the band is recognized as one of Jacksonville's pioneering punk rock acts. They gained a cult following through extensive touring and energetic performances, sharing stages with bands like The Ramones, Dead Kennedys, Iggy Pop, and Black Flag.
History
[edit]Ray McKelvey was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in 1956 and moved to Jacksonville in 1959. After playing in cover bands during high school, he became frustrated with the lack of a punk scene in North Florida. In 1982, he formed Stevie Stiletto and the Switchblades, drawing inspiration from the emerging punk movement and bringing it to the local music scene.
The band became known for its unpredictable and theatrical performances, incorporating explosive stage antics such as shaving cream cans and fire extinguishers. Their music blended traditional punk energy with Southern rock influences, often featuring humorous and politically charged lyrics.
Touring and Influence
[edit]Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Stevie Stiletto and the Switchblades toured across the United States and Europe, building a dedicated following. The band shared stages with The Ramones, Dead Kennedys, Iggy Pop, Black Flag, and the Circle Jerks, further cementing their place in the punk community.
Despite lineup changes and McKelvey's health struggles, the band continued to record and perform. Their underground success helped shape the Florida punk scene and influenced future regional punk bands.

In 2009, the documentary *My Life Is Great: The Stevie Stiletto Story* chronicled McKelvey’s career, featuring interviews with bandmates and fellow musicians. The band’s legacy continues through their recorded music and influence on future punk artists.
