Stana Basarab was the eldest daughter of Neagoe Basarab and Milica Despina.[1] She was born in the early 16th century.

Marriage

She married in July 1526 with Stefanita Voda.[1] In 1527, just one year after her marriage, Stefantia died, Grigore Ureche suggesting that Stana poisoned him.[1]

The 2 Wars

between January and November 1526, Radu of Afumati and Stefanita where in 2 wars with one another, which where thought to be caused, by the fact that both of them wanted to marry her sister, Ruxandra[1]. In reality, they where caused by the fact that John Zapolya, which Milica Despina and her daughters where in the care of, let Radu decide first which one to marry, choosing Ruxandra and breaking the promise, Neagoe Basarab made with Stefanita, in that Stefanita was allowed to choose first, which daughter to marry.[1] It is from the second campaign, on 4 November 1526, that Stefanita caught the illnes, that probably caused his death.[1]

Last years and death

Now widowed she returns to Sibiu to her mother, Milica and becomes a nun taking the name Sofronia.[1] She dies on 8 February 1531.[1]
