Spexster

[edit]

Spexster is an online platform that connects filmmakers, advertisers, and production professionals for hiring, collaboration, and the sale of high-quality video content, including spec ads, custom productions, and stock-style exclusive content. Founded in 2021 by John Kubin and Jed Williams, Spexster was designed by filmmakers for filmmakers, providing a hybrid marketplace that allows brands to hire production talent, find local crew, or purchase curated commercial content. The platform features Crew Map, an interactive global directory for hiring videographers, directors, editors, and on-set professionals, and Portals, an AI-powered content discovery tool that delivers relevant videos and creators to advertisers based on their brand preferences. Brands and agencies can use the platform to source, license, or commission video projects, while professional creators can monetize their work and access job opportunities globally.

History

[edit]

Spexster was founded in 2021 by John Kubin, a voiceover artist and producer, and Jed Williams, a filmmaker with experience in cinematography and commercial production. Both founders had backgrounds in independent content creation and saw a gap in the market for a more efficient way to connect advertisers with talented filmmakers outside of traditional agency structures.

Before launching Spexster, Kubin and Williams co-founded Pretty Nifty Productions, producing over 200 commercials for major brands, network reality shows, and even Super Bowl ads. Through this experience, they recognized the inefficiencies in hiring creative talent and acquiring high-quality commercial footage. This led to the development of Spexster as a marketplace where creators can sell spec work, advertisers can discover original content, and production teams can collaborate seamlessly.

Platform and Features

[edit]

Spexster differentiates itself from traditional stock footage platforms by offering exclusive, brand-ready content. Instead of licensing generic stock clips, advertisers can purchase fully produced spec ads that can be customized or re-shot with brand-specific elements. The platform also allows production professionals to sell their original creative work and bid on projects posted by brands and agencies.

Crew Map

[edit]

Launched in 2023, the Crew Map is an interactive tool that helps advertisers and filmmakers find local production professionals around the world. Users can browse portfolios, view demo reels, and directly message or hire crew members for projects. Unlike traditional hiring sites, Crew Map provides a visual, location-based interface to streamline the process of assembling a production team.

Portals

[edit]

Spexster introduced Portals in 2024 as an AI-powered content delivery system. Advertisers can set up a free brand portal by inputting parameters such as industry, content needs, and keywords. The system then automatically curates and delivers new content and relevant creators, allowing brands to find exclusive footage and hire talent effortlessly. This feature was designed to reduce the time brands spend searching for content while ensuring they receive fresh, high-quality creative assets.

Business Model

[edit]

Spexster operates on a commission-based model, where advertisers pay a 20% fee on project budgets for productions managed through the platform. Unlike many competitors, Spexster does not charge filmmakers subscription fees or job posting fees, making it an accessible marketplace for independent creators. The company also plans to introduce a subscription service for premium access to content and additional platform features.

Founders

[edit]

John Kubin

[edit]

John Kubin is an entrepreneur and voiceover artist with over 15 years of experience in the entertainment industry. He has provided voiceovers for thousands of commercials, video games, and television projects. In addition to co-founding Pretty Nifty Productions, Kubin played a key role in designing Spexster’s creator-focused marketplace, ensuring that filmmakers can monetize their work while retaining creative control.

Jed Williams

[edit]

Jed Williams is a filmmaker and cinematographer with extensive experience in commercial and television production. He started his career as an actor on network television before transitioning into directing and cinematography. Through his work on high-profile commercial campaigns, Williams developed an in-depth understanding of the challenges both creators and advertisers face in acquiring and producing custom video content, which led to the development of Spexster.

Industry Position and Recognition

[edit]

Spexster competes with stock footage platforms (Getty Images, Adobe Stock), freelancer sites (Upwork, Fiverr), and crew hiring platforms (The Mandy Network, Staff Me Up) but differentiates itself by offering both talent hiring and exclusive video sales in one platform.

In 2025, Spexster released a Video Production Trends Report highlighting industry shifts toward AI-generated content, short-form advertising, and micro-targeted brand storytelling "Spexster Reveals 2025 Video Trends: Insights for Creators and Brands".
