The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination is an important academic assessment in Bangladesh. It marks the end of ten years of schooling. The SSC exam is also a gateway to higher secondary education. Various education boards across the country conduct the SSC exam annually. The SSC exam is a standardized measure of student achievement at the secondary level.
Structure of the SSC Examination
[edit]The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination in Bangladesh is structured to assess students' knowledge and skills across a wide range of subjects. This examination is designed to cater to the diverse academic interests of students by offering different streams and subject combinations.
Subjects
[edit]The SSC curriculum has two types of subjects. The core subjects are mandatory for all students. The group-specific subjects vary based on the academic stream chosen by the student. Students can also select optional subjects. These optional subjects can influence their Grade Point Average (GPA).
Core subjects: All students, regardless of their chosen group, must take core subjects: Bangla 1st paper, Bangla 2nd paper, English 1st paper, English 2nd paper, General Mathematics, Religion (Islam or Hindu or Buddhist or Christian based on the student's faith) and Moral Studies, Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Group-specific subjects: Students choose one of three streams, each with its own subjects:
- Science: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Higher Mathematics, Bangladesh and Global Studies.
- Humanities: History of Bangladesh and World Civilization, Civics and Citizenship, Geography and Environment, General Science.
- Business Studies: Accounting, Business Entrepreneurship, Economics, General Science.
Optional subjects: Such as Computer Studies, Agriculture, or Home Economics can be selected based on interest.
Practical exams: Science-grouped students undertake practical exams in: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Practical exams are combined with theoretical scores to determine final grades in these subjects.
Examination boards
[edit]The SSC examination in Bangladesh is conducted by several education boards, each responsible for overseeing the exams within their respective regions. The major boards include the Dhaka Education Board, Chittagong Education Board, Rajshahi Education Board, Comilla Education Board, Sylhet Education Board, Barisal Education Board, and Dinajpur Education Board. In addition to these, there are specialized boards like the Madrasa Education Board, which administers the Dakhil exam for madrasa students., and the Technical Education Board.
